GTA 6’s wildlife is becoming one of the more unexpected parts of Rockstar Games’ next open world. New information confirms that wild monkeys will roam Leonida alongside an animal roster containing more than 170 species.
The detail comes from recent coverage surrounding Rockstar’s fictional version of Florida, where wildlife appears to play a much larger role than it did in GTA 5.
Alligators, flamingos and pelicans were already natural choices for the setting. Monkeys are a more surprising addition.
However, their presence has a real-world basis.
Wild monkey populations do exist in Florida, giving Rockstar another unusual piece of the state to recreate and exaggerate inside Grand Theft Auto VI.
Wild Monkeys Are Coming to GTA 6’s Leonida
The newly confirmed GTA 6 monkeys are expected to appear in the wild rather than existing only inside zoos or scripted sequences.
That fits Rockstar’s broader approach to Leonida.
The studio has spent years researching Florida’s cities, nightlife, communities and natural environments. Its fictional state draws inspiration from recognizable places while rearranging them to serve the game.
Florida’s wild monkey populations provide ideal material.
They are unusual enough to feel like something Rockstar invented, yet they exist in the real state that inspired Leonida.
That balance between reality and absurdity has always suited Grand Theft Auto.
Florida Really Does Have Wild Monkeys
The idea of monkeys roaming Florida may sound like classic GTA satire, but there is real history behind it.
Rhesus macaques have established populations in parts of the state, particularly around Silver Springs in central Florida.
The animals are not native to Florida.
Their presence dates back decades, with populations eventually becoming established in the surrounding environment.
That makes them exactly the sort of regional detail Rockstar tends to notice.
GTA 6 does not need to recreate a particular real-world monkey population exactly. Leonida gives Rockstar freedom to relocate and exaggerate recognizable Florida elements while preserving the basic inspiration.
More Than 170 Animal Species Will Populate Leonida
Monkeys represent only a tiny part of a much larger system.
Recent information indicates that GTA 6 contains more than 170 animal species.
That is an enormous increase in emphasis compared with GTA 5.
Known creatures include alligators, flamingos, pelicans, sharks, dolphins, manatees, deer and numerous bird species. Domestic animals such as cats and dogs are also expected throughout populated areas.
Marine life expands the ecosystem beyond dry land.
Sea turtles, fish and other aquatic species give Rockstar reasons to make Leonida’s coastal waters more than empty spaces separating parts of the map.
This becomes particularly relevant because scuba diving is among the activities reported for GTA 6.
Some GTA 6 Animals Can Be Tracked
Rockstar is apparently giving wildlife a purpose beyond environmental decoration.
Animals can reportedly fall into categories including Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.
Certain creatures can also be tracked.
Those terms immediately recall Red Dead Redemption 2, where studying and tracking wildlife became an important part of exploration.
GTA 6 does not necessarily need to reproduce that game’s hunting systems. Its modern setting offers very different possibilities.
Wildlife photography, discovery challenges or other collection systems could potentially fit Leonida, although Rockstar has not fully explained how the classifications work.
For now, what matters is that animals appear to have structure behind them.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Clearly Influenced Rockstar
The scale of GTA 6’s animal ecosystem makes comparisons with Red Dead Redemption 2 unavoidable.
Rockstar’s western created one of the studio’s most convincing natural environments.
Predators hunted other animals. Birds scavenged. Different species occupied specific habitats. Unexpected wildlife encounters could interrupt a journey without being attached to a formal mission.
Leonida allows Rockstar to take that experience into a radically different setting.
Instead of wilderness dominating the map, GTA 6 mixes nature with highways, resorts, suburbs and major cities.
An alligator near a residential property or monkeys close to human settlements can create situations that feel distinctly Floridian.
Wildlife Gives Players a Reason to Leave Vice City
Vice City will naturally attract much of the attention surrounding GTA 6.
Rockstar’s modern interpretation contains beaches, nightlife, skyscrapers and crowded streets. Yet the broader Leonida map extends far beyond the city.
Wetlands, coastal regions, islands, smaller communities and wilderness give the game substantial environmental variety.
More than 170 animal species make those areas useful.
A large rural region can quickly feel empty if there is little happening outside missions. Wildlife fills that space with movement and unpredictable encounters.
Rare species could provide another reason to deliberately travel away from major roads.
Fans may be surprised by how much time they eventually spend outside Vice City.
Dynamic Weather Could Change Wildlife Encounters
Animals are only one part of Rockstar’s environmental simulation.
GTA 6 also features dynamic regional weather, including tropical storms and hurricanes.
Rain can affect specific parts of Leonida rather than covering the entire map simultaneously. Wet surfaces and puddles can remain after storms pass, while wind influences vegetation, water and environmental objects.
Rockstar has not explained how wildlife reacts to those changing conditions.
However, the combination creates interesting possibilities.
Animals behaving differently during storms or appearing under particular environmental conditions would make the ecosystem feel more connected to the wider world.
Whether Rockstar has implemented that level of simulation remains to be seen.
Monkeys Show How Deep Rockstar’s Florida Research Goes
The inclusion of wild monkeys is interesting precisely because they are not the first animal most people associate with Florida.
Alligators are obvious. Flamingos fit the imagery. Pelicans belong naturally along the coast.
Monkeys require more specific knowledge of the state.
That suggests Rockstar’s research went beyond tourist landmarks and familiar stereotypes.
The studio reportedly sent teams throughout Florida to study local communities, nightlife, law enforcement and different environments while developing Leonida.
Regional wildlife was clearly part of that process.
GTA 6’s Wilderness Is Becoming a Game of Its Own
Grand Theft Auto will always revolve around cars, crime and cities.
Yet Rockstar appears determined to ensure that GTA 6 remains interesting when players leave the pavement behind.
More than 170 species, trackable animals, marine ecosystems, monkeys and unpredictable predators give Leonida’s wilderness an identity separate from Vice City.
That could prove important across a game players may explore for hundreds of hours.
Rockstar does not need every animal to become part of a mission. Their value comes from making the world behave as though it contains life beyond Lucia and Jason.
Wild monkeys are a perfect example.
They sound ridiculous enough for Grand Theft Auto, authentic enough for Florida and unpredictable enough to create the kind of unscripted encounter players remember.
Sometimes the strangest parts of GTA do not need to be invented.
Rockstar just needs to look closely at Florida.
