GTA 6 Could Take Around 80 Hours as Rockstar Developer Reveals Scale of His Playthrough

GTA 6 could demand a substantial time commitment from players who want to explore more than its central storyline. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has reportedly revealed that one of his Grand Theft Auto VI playthroughs lasted approximately 80 hours.

The figure immediately gives fans another clue about the scale of Rockstar’s return to Vice City. However, there is an important qualification. Nelson’s playthrough included the main story alongside optional activities, so the number should not be interpreted as an official 80-hour campaign length.

Different players will inevitably finish the game at different speeds.

Even so, an 80-hour developer playthrough suggests Rockstar has created a substantial amount of content around Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos and the enormous state of Leonida.

GTA 6 Developer Playthrough Lasted Around 80 Hours

The reported figure emerged following Rockstar’s recent Extended Look and subsequent discussions with invited media and creators.

Nelson reportedly explained that one of his own runs through Grand Theft Auto VI took roughly 80 hours. That playthrough was not limited to completing story missions as quickly as possible.

It also included optional activities.

That distinction makes the number much more useful when placed in context. It offers an example of how long someone familiar with the game might spend experiencing a mixture of narrative content and open-world distractions.

It does not establish a universal completion time.

A player concentrating almost exclusively on story missions could finish considerably faster. Someone determined to explore Leonida thoroughly could easily spend much longer.

GTA 6’s Main Story Is Not Confirmed to Be 80 Hours

Headlines describing GTA 6 as an 80-hour game need some caution.

Rockstar has not officially advertised an exact campaign length. Nelson’s comments concern his individual experience with the game, including content beyond the main narrative.

Completion times are particularly difficult to standardize in Grand Theft Auto.

One player might travel directly from mission to mission. Another could spend an evening stealing cars, exploring the coastline or becoming involved in unscripted police encounters without advancing the story at all.

GTA 6 appears designed to encourage the latter behavior.

Rockstar’s Extended Look showed basketball, scuba diving, fishing, racing, gym activities and various other distractions. Every optional system increases the gap between a focused story run and a broader playthrough.

Fans may be surprised by the 80-hour figure, but it makes considerably more sense when those activities are included.

Leonida’s Huge Map Gives Players More to Explore

The potential playtime also needs to be considered alongside the reported size of the GTA 6 map.

Rockstar North leadership has said Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s world. Vice City itself is reportedly around twice as large as Los Santos, while the overall playable space is said to significantly exceed Red Dead Redemption 2’s.

Rockstar is not simply creating a larger city.

The Extended Look revealed beaches, waterways, dense urban districts, residential areas and environments beyond central Vice City. Travelling between those regions naturally creates opportunities for exploration.

More importantly, Rockstar appears determined to keep those spaces populated.

Large crowds, traffic and interactive locations are visible throughout the official footage. A huge map becomes much more valuable when players repeatedly find reasons to stop rather than simply driving through it.

Optional Activities Could Add Dozens of Hours

The list of confirmed or demonstrated GTA 6 activities is already substantial.

Basketball has a dedicated shooting mechanic. Scuba diving allows players to explore beneath Leonida’s waters. Fishing appears alongside kayaking, jet skis and airboats.

Players can also exercise, participate in shooting challenges and take part in different forms of racing.

These activities are not necessarily required to complete Jason and Lucia’s story.

That is precisely why the 80-hour developer playthrough should not be confused with campaign length.

Rockstar’s open worlds traditionally reward distraction. A player can leave home intending to complete one mission and spend an hour dealing with an entirely unrelated situation.

GTA 6 seems built to amplify that tendency.

Dynamic NPCs Could Make Exploration Less Predictable

The amount of scripted content is only one factor affecting playtime.

Rockstar says GTA 6 NPC interactions substantially expand on systems developed for Red Dead Redemption 2. Characters can respond more dynamically to Jason, Lucia and events happening around them.

Police behavior appears deeper too.

Authorities can reportedly gather information about suspects, including their appearance and vehicles. CCTV and witnesses may also influence how crimes develop.

Systems like these can create gameplay without requiring a traditional mission marker.

An attempted robbery can lead to a pursuit. A pursuit can force the player into an unfamiliar part of Leonida. From there, another activity might take over.

That unpredictability is central to Grand Theft Auto’s longevity.

How GTA 6 Could Compare With GTA 5

GTA V’s main story could be completed far faster than 80 hours by players concentrating on the campaign, while completionist runs naturally required considerably more time.

GTA 6 appears positioned to widen that difference.

The map is larger, the protagonists appear more interactive and Rockstar is incorporating systems developed during Red Dead Redemption 2’s production.

Jason and Lucia also have an apparent relationship system, adding another layer to the campaign.

Contextual choices between the pair suggest their interactions may develop according to player behavior. Rockstar has not yet explained exactly how much those choices affect the narrative.

Nevertheless, it reinforces the impression that GTA 6 is more structurally complex than simply moving between a sequence of missions.

An 80-Hour Playthrough Would Not Mean 80 Hours of Missions

There is another important distinction when discussing game length.

More hours do not automatically mean more story missions.

Travel, exploration, optional conversations, side activities and random events can all contribute to total playtime. GTA 6’s enormous environment makes those elements particularly important.

A tightly written 40-hour story surrounded by another 40 hours of exploration would create a very different experience from an 80-hour linear campaign.

Rockstar has not provided enough information to determine exactly how that balance works.

Therefore, players should treat Nelson’s figure as a useful reference rather than a specification printed on the box.

GTA 6 Could Keep Players Busy Far Beyond the Campaign

The bigger question is not whether every player reaches the credits after exactly 80 hours. They will not.

What matters is that a senior Rockstar developer could spend roughly that amount of time combining the story with some of Leonida’s optional content.

That points toward substantial depth.

It also excludes whatever Rockstar eventually does with the next generation of GTA Online, which remains largely separate from the current single-player discussion.

For players interested primarily in Jason and Lucia, the base game already appears capable of offering a lengthy experience.

GTA 6’s Scale Is Becoming Clearer Before Launch

Rockstar’s recent disclosures are gradually putting the Extended Look into perspective.

Leonida is reportedly roughly twice the size of GTA V’s map. NPCs are more reactive. Police systems have additional depth. Numerous recreational activities sit alongside the main story.

Now there is an 80-hour developer playthrough to add to that picture.

It should not become an artificial promise about GTA 6 completion time. Rockstar has not said everyone needs 80 hours to finish the campaign.

Instead, it demonstrates something more useful.

Grand Theft Auto VI appears designed to consume as much time as players are willing to give it.

For some, the credits may arrive much sooner. For others, 80 hours could be only the beginning.
