Xbox Player Tries to Get GTA 6 for Free Using Microsoft Rewards, but the Strategy Has Complications

GTA 6 is expected to become one of the biggest gaming purchases of its generation, but one Xbox player has been working on a different strategy: paying nothing at all.

The plan involves Microsoft Rewards, the loyalty program that allows eligible Xbox and Microsoft users to collect points through selected activities before exchanging them for rewards. Instead of spending those points immediately, they can be accumulated and eventually converted into Xbox credit.

Pure Xbox has been testing exactly that approach with Grand Theft Auto VI in mind. After months of saving, the project has reached roughly the halfway point. However, changes to Microsoft Rewards, redemption restrictions and uncertainty surrounding GTA 6’s final price have made the challenge more complicated than it initially appeared.

It can still work. It simply requires considerably more planning.

The Goal Is to Buy GTA 6 Entirely With Microsoft Rewards

The basic strategy is straightforward.

Microsoft Rewards gives users points for completing eligible tasks across Microsoft’s ecosystem. Depending on the country and account, those activities can include Bing searches, Xbox related activities, purchases and other daily or promotional challenges.

Points can then be exchanged for rewards, including Xbox gift cards where available.

Instead of treating those points as small discounts, Pure Xbox began saving them specifically toward the eventual purchase of GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S.

After several months, the accumulated balance had reportedly reached approximately 66,000 Microsoft Rewards points. Depending on available redemption options, that represents a substantial portion of the credit likely needed to buy the game.

For anyone who already uses Microsoft services every day, the idea is appealing. Routine activity gradually becomes store credit.

Microsoft Rewards Has Become Harder to Maximize

The first complication is that Microsoft Rewards points are not necessarily as easy to accumulate as they once were.

Microsoft has adjusted the program repeatedly over the years. Certain activities have disappeared, point values have changed and some earning opportunities differ significantly by region.

That makes long term calculations difficult.

A player might estimate how many months are required to reach a particular balance based on today’s earning rate, only for Microsoft to alter the program before that target is reached.

Moreover, not every user receives exactly the same offers. Rewards availability can depend on location, account status and Microsoft’s current promotions.

This means there is no universal formula guaranteeing that every Xbox owner can collect enough credit for GTA 6 within the same period.

Daily Tasks Require Consistency

Another issue is time.

Microsoft Rewards is often described as a way to earn credit for activities users already perform, but maximizing the program usually requires some consistency.

Daily searches, streaks and Xbox activities can be easy to forget. Missing individual tasks does not destroy the strategy, but repeatedly ignoring them slows progress considerably.

That creates an interesting question about what “free” actually means.

The player may not hand Microsoft money when redeeming the final gift card, but earning the required points still demands attention and time. For someone who enjoys completing the activities anyway, that trade is reasonable. For others, chasing every available point could start feeling like work.

Fans may be surprised by how quickly small daily rewards accumulate, though. Over many months, seemingly insignificant point totals can become meaningful store credit.

GTA 6’s Final Xbox Price Is Still an Important Variable

The biggest uncertainty is the amount of credit ultimately required.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive control the pricing of Grand Theft Auto 6, and different editions could carry substantially different prices.

A standard edition would naturally be the easiest target for a Microsoft Rewards strategy. Deluxe or premium packages containing additional content would require a larger points balance.

There may also be regional pricing differences.

This creates a moving finish line for anyone collecting Rewards points months in advance. Saving enough credit based on a conventional full-price game is one thing. Discovering that the desired GTA 6 edition costs significantly more would extend the challenge.

The sensible strategy is therefore to keep collecting points beyond the estimated minimum rather than stopping at a specific early target.

Xbox Gift Card Expiration Creates Another Problem

Perhaps the most important detail involves redemption timing.

Microsoft Rewards points can remain in an account while the user continues saving, subject to the program’s applicable terms. However, once those points are exchanged for certain promotional Xbox or Microsoft gift cards, the resulting balance may have an expiration period.

That means converting a large Rewards balance too early can be risky.

If someone redeems enough points for Xbox store credit months before GTA 6 becomes available to purchase, that credit could potentially expire before it can be used.

The safer approach is to leave the value in points until the game is actually available for purchase or preorder, while checking the exact terms shown during redemption.

This is one area where patience matters.

Rewards Points and Store Credit Are Not the Same Thing

The distinction between unredeemed Rewards points and redeemed promotional credit is easy to overlook.

Points exist within the Microsoft Rewards system. Xbox gift card credit exists within the user’s Microsoft account after redemption. Different expiration and usage conditions can apply.

Anyone attempting the same GTA 6 strategy should therefore read the redemption conditions before converting a large balance.

A few minutes checking the terms could prevent months of accumulated rewards from being wasted.

Microsoft Rewards Can Still Make GTA 6 Much Cheaper

Even if a player fails to collect enough points to cover the entire purchase, the strategy does not become useless.

Suppose a user earns enough Xbox credit to cover half the cost of GTA 6. The remaining amount can still be paid normally, turning the Rewards balance into a substantial discount.

That may be a more realistic objective for many players.

There is no requirement to make the challenge all or nothing. Saving £20, £30 or £40 on a major release is still worthwhile for someone who earned those points through activities they would have completed anyway.

Moreover, players who start collecting now have time on their side. A small daily total becomes much more useful when accumulated over several months.

Can You Really Get GTA 6 for Free on Xbox?

Technically, yes. If Microsoft Rewards remains available in your region, if you accumulate enough points and if the relevant Xbox gift card options remain redeemable, it may be possible to cover the full digital purchase using Rewards credit.

But there are no guarantees.

Microsoft can change earning rates and available rewards. Promotional balances may carry expiration conditions. Rockstar’s final pricing and edition structure also determine how much credit players actually need.

For that reason, the strategy works best as a long term savings project rather than a guaranteed method for obtaining GTA 6 for free.

The Pure Xbox experiment nevertheless demonstrates how substantial Microsoft Rewards can become when points are saved instead of spent on smaller purchases.

Halfway to GTA 6 without directly paying for it is already a respectable result.

Whether the remaining points arrive before it is time to buy the game will be the real test.
