Xbox Pushes Back on GTA 6 PS5 Sales Claim, but PlayStation Still Looks Ahead

Microsoft has disputed claims that GTA 6 pre orders are performing dramatically better on PlayStation 5 than on Xbox Series X|S. The original claim suggested that PS5 demand was beating Xbox by an eight to one margin, based on affiliate commerce data.

Xbox says that figure does not represent real preorder data. That response is fair. Affiliate clicks are not the same as confirmed sales. However, the broader question remains uncomfortable for Microsoft. Even if the exact ratio is wrong, Grand Theft Auto VI appears to be another major moment where PlayStation holds the stronger position.

Fans may be surprised by how quickly a single data point turned into a console war headline. With GTA 6, that was almost inevitable.

Xbox Says Affiliate Clicks Are Not Sales

The disputed figure reportedly came from commerce affiliate activity, not from Rockstar, Sony, Microsoft or a full retail audit. That matters. Affiliate data can show what readers clicked after visiting a specific website, but it cannot measure every purchase across PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Amazon, Walmart, Argos, Game, or other regional retailers.

Microsoft’s response focused on that distinction. The company argued that the data does not reflect true GTA 6 pre order sales and suggested people should wait for real figures.

That is a reasonable defence. A player may click a PS5 preorder link and never buy. Another may ignore media links completely and purchase directly through the Xbox Store. Digital storefront behaviour is especially important here because GTA 6’s boxed version is expected to contain a download code rather than a disc.

In other words, some Xbox buyers may simply be invisible to affiliate tracking.

Why the PS5 Lead Still Feels Plausible

The eight to one number needs caution, but the direction of travel is easier to believe. GTA 6 PS5 demand is likely to be higher than Xbox demand because PlayStation 5 has a larger active console audience this generation.

That does not mean Xbox is failing to sell the game. A platform can record strong orders and still trail a competitor. Both statements can be true at once.

The more realistic question is not whether PlayStation leads. It almost certainly does. The real question is by how much.

A two to one or three to one gap would broadly match the expected platform balance. An eight to one gap would suggest something sharper, such as stronger PlayStation marketing, stronger retail interest, more dual console owners choosing PS5, or Xbox players waiting rather than committing early.

Sony Has Made GTA 6 Feel Like a PlayStation Event

Sony has been aggressive in connecting Grand Theft Auto VI with PS5. Its messaging has leaned into the idea that the game will be best experienced on PlayStation hardware, with DualSense features, 3D audio and platform level promotion all playing a role.

That type of marketing matters, even when a game is not exclusive. Casual buyers do not always track platform parity in detail. If they repeatedly see GTA 6 framed beside PlayStation, the association sticks.

Moreover, many players will choose the platform where their friends are likely to play. GTA 6 may launch as a story first title, but its long term life will almost certainly include a major online component. Social gravity matters before multiplayer even arrives.

Xbox Faces a Difficult Timing Problem

The timing is awkward for Xbox. Microsoft has announced console price rises that take effect on August 1, 2026, including higher prices for several Series X and Series S models in the United States.

That creates a difficult comparison for late buyers. If someone is upgrading mainly for GTA 6 Xbox or GTA 6 on PS5, price becomes a major factor. PlayStation already has the larger market presence. If Xbox hardware also becomes more expensive, Microsoft’s pitch becomes harder.

There may still be reasons to choose Xbox. Some players prefer the controller, ecosystem, achievements, Microsoft Rewards or existing library. Others already own a Series X and have no reason to switch.

However, for a casual player still on older hardware, PlayStation may look like the safer default.

Digital Habits Could Hide Xbox Demand

Xbox does have one strong counterargument. Its audience may be more digitally concentrated. Microsoft has spent years building behaviour around Game Pass, account libraries, cloud access and direct storefront use.

If Xbox players are more likely to buy through the Microsoft Store, affiliate reports may undercount them. That is especially relevant because the GTA 6 physical edition offers no traditional disc advantage. A boxed code and a store download are functionally close.

Still, this only explains part of the story. It may narrow the gap. It does not prove Xbox is level with PlayStation.

GTA 6 Is Becoming a Hardware Test

GTA 6 release date is set for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no confirmed PC version for launch, so console choice matters more than it usually would.

This turns GTA 6 into a public test for the entire console generation. Which system do late adopters buy? Which version do dual console owners choose? Which platform gets the stronger word of mouth after performance comparisons arrive?

Those answers will matter to Sony, Microsoft and Rockstar. They may also influence future marketing deals and platform priorities.

The Eight to One Claim Is Not the Final Story

The reported eight to one figure should not be treated as confirmed market data. Xbox is right to challenge that. Affiliate activity is useful, but it is not a complete sales report.

Yet Microsoft’s denial does not erase the larger pattern. PlayStation appears better positioned for GTA 6’s first wave, helped by a larger audience, stronger marketing and clearer consumer momentum.

Xbox may still sell a huge number of copies. It probably will. But GTA 6 is not judged by ordinary standards. It is the kind of release that exposes platform strength in public.

Right now, Sony looks more comfortable in that spotlight.
