A major new look at GTA 6 has revealed some of the clearest details yet about Rockstar Games’ plans for Leonida. The information covers everything from the size of the map and its wildlife to police behaviour, weather and environmental detail.
The revelations originate from Game Informer’s extensive Grand Theft Auto VI cover story, which included developer interviews and new material from Rockstar.
Individually, many of these features sound like natural improvements. Put together, however, they suggest Rockstar is attempting something more ambitious than simply building a larger version of GTA 5.
Here are 10 of the most important details.
1. GTA 6’s Map Is Much Larger Than Los Santos
GTA 6’s Leonida map reportedly covers roughly twice the area of GTA 5’s world.
Vice City is only one part of it. Players will travel through wetlands, coastal communities, countryside and more remote regions, including Mount Kalaga National Park.
The important distinction is variety. Rockstar appears less interested in simply adding kilometres of road and more focused on giving different parts of Leonida their own identity.
2. Rockstar Is Not Sacrificing Detail for Scale
Rockstar North development head Aaron Garbut has discussed the challenge of balancing enormous environments with small details.
For GTA 6, the studio’s goal is apparently to avoid choosing between the two.
That philosophy can already be seen in official footage. Crowds are dense, environments contain large numbers of individual objects, and characters react convincingly to their surroundings.
A world twice GTA 5’s size means little if much of it feels empty. Rockstar appears acutely aware of that problem.
3. More Buildings Will Have Accessible Interiors
GTA 6 interiors are another major part of the expanded world.
Rockstar is putting greater emphasis on buildings players can actually enter rather than treating most of Vice City’s architecture as scenery.
That could have a significant effect on exploration and criminal activity. Shops and businesses create opportunities for robberies, while accessible locations provide more room for missions and spontaneous encounters.
It should also make the city feel less like a collection of impressive façades.
4. More Than 170 Animal Species Populate Leonida
Rockstar’s experience developing Red Dead Redemption 2 is clearly influencing GTA 6.
More than 170 animal species reportedly inhabit Leonida. Confirmed examples include alligators, flamingos, pelicans and monkeys.
Wildlife can also fall into classifications such as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, with tracking involved for certain animals.
This makes the wilderness considerably more important. Players venturing beyond Vice City will encounter ecosystems rather than empty countryside connecting major locations.
5. GTA 6 Has a Completely Reworked Weather System
Rockstar has re-engineered its GTA 6 weather system to make conditions more localized and persistent.
Fully dynamic clouds can move across Leonida while rain falls in one area and sunshine remains visible elsewhere.
Rain also leaves consequences. Roads and other surfaces stay wet, while puddles can remain after the weather changes. Rainbows may appear under suitable conditions.
It is a subtle feature with major visual implications.
6. Hurricanes and Tropical Storms Are Part of Leonida
Rockstar is embracing the more extreme side of Florida’s climate as well.
GTA 6 will include tropical storms and hurricanes, along with thunder and lightning.
The game’s wind simulation is surprisingly detailed. Offshore breezes, updrafts and airflow around buildings can influence the environment. Wind can move hair and debris, disturb water and bend vegetation in swampy areas.
Rockstar has not yet explained how hurricanes will affect missions or structures. Still, the atmospheric possibilities are considerable.
7. Police Will Be Harder to Escape
One of the more important gameplay changes concerns law enforcement.
Previous GTA games often allowed players to escape simply by breaking line of sight and hiding until their wanted level disappeared. GTA 6’s police system appears designed to make that process less predictable.
Law enforcement is reportedly smarter and more persistent, meaning players may need to think more carefully before committing crimes.
That could change the rhythm of free-roam chaos considerably.
If escaping becomes more involved, committing a robbery or starting a gunfight may carry consequences that last beyond the initial confrontation.
8. Leonida’s NPCs Will Look More Varied
Rockstar is also addressing one of the easiest ways to break immersion in an open-world game: repetitive pedestrians.
GTA 6 NPCs reportedly feature greater variation in body types, clothing and physical characteristics.
That matters in a game built around crowded beaches, nightclubs and busy streets.
Seeing the same character model repeatedly can make even a technically impressive city feel artificial. Greater variation should help Vice City’s crowds appear less obviously generated.
9. Leonida Offers Plenty to Do Beyond Missions
GTA has always encouraged distraction, and GTA 6 appears ready to continue that tradition.
Activities reported from the new coverage include base jumping, scuba diving and mini golf, among other diversions.
The appeal is not simply having another checklist of minigames. Activities give players reasons to explore parts of the map they might otherwise ignore.
Scuba diving, for example, immediately makes Leonida’s enormous coastline and surrounding waters more meaningful.
Rockstar’s best open worlds have always rewarded curiosity. GTA 6 appears designed around the same principle.
10. Lucia and Jason’s Actions Will Have Greater Consequences
Perhaps the most important change is broader than any single mechanic.
Rockstar appears to be designing GTA 6 around the idea that actions have consequences.
Smarter police are one example. Lucia and Jason’s relationship provides another.
The protagonists are not simply two interchangeable criminals. Rockstar’s writers have described them as contrasting, flawed characters who can disagree, make mistakes and learn from one another.
That could give criminal decisions more narrative weight.
GTA 5’s three protagonists often pursued separate interests before coming together for major jobs. Lucia and Jason appear much more closely connected. When something goes wrong, the consequences can affect their relationship as well as their criminal plans.
GTA 6 Is About More Than Building a Bigger Map
The most revealing part of the Game Informer coverage is not any single headline feature.
It is the way these systems appear to work together.
A larger map gives wildlife room to matter. Dynamic weather makes that landscape change over time. More interiors create reasons to stop and explore. Smarter police give criminal decisions additional risk, while a more varied population makes Leonida feel less artificial.
This is where Rockstar’s ambitions become clearer.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is not simply trying to put more content inside a larger version of Vice City. Rockstar wants Leonida to react, change and remain interesting when players abandon the story and start making their own trouble.
That has always been the magic of Grand Theft Auto.
GTA 6 appears determined to take it considerably further.
