GTA 6’s Leonida Is Far More Than Vice City as Rockstar Details Its Most Ambitious Open World Yet

GTA 6’s Leonida is beginning to look less like an expanded Vice City and more like Rockstar Games’ attempt to build an entire living state.

A major new Game Informer cover story has provided the clearest picture yet of the world surrounding Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval. Based on interviews with Rockstar developers, the feature details a vast interpretation of Florida filled with dense cities, rural communities, wildlife, extreme weather and a population designed to feel more varied than anything the studio has created before.

The scale is considerable. However, size alone is not Rockstar’s priority.

The studio wants Leonida to capture Florida’s contradictions.

GTA 6’s Map Is Roughly Twice the Size of GTA 5’s World

Rockstar North development head Aaron Garbut reportedly describes GTA 6’s map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s.

That immediately makes Leonida enormous, but the more interesting question is how Rockstar intends to use all that space.

Vice City remains the most recognizable location. Beyond its streets, however, players will travel through wetlands, countryside, coastal areas, small communities and the northern reaches of Leonida.

Mount Kalaga National Park is among the major regions Rockstar has already identified. Other areas draw inspiration from the Florida Keys, the Everglades and communities far removed from Vice City’s neon skyline.

The result should be a map built around contrast rather than continuous urban sprawl.

One journey could begin among skyscrapers and crowded nightlife before ending in remote wilderness.

Rockstar Wants More Buildings to Feel Accessible

Scale also extends inside Leonida’s buildings.

The Game Informer coverage indicates that Rockstar has placed greater emphasis on interiors, addressing one of the longstanding limitations of large open-world cities.

GTA 5 created a convincing Los Santos, but many buildings remained decorative shells. GTA 6 appears to be pushing toward a world where more locations have functional interiors and reasons to enter them.

That becomes especially important for criminal gameplay.

Shops, businesses and other locations can provide opportunities for robberies. Greater interior density also gives Rockstar more places to hide activities, characters and environmental storytelling.

A bigger map is impressive. A world with more usable space is arguably more important.

More Than 170 Animal Species Live Across Leonida

Rockstar is also applying lessons learned from Red Dead Redemption 2.

GTA 6 will feature more than 170 animal species, with wildlife ranging from alligators and flamingos to pelicans and monkeys.

Animals reportedly include classifications such as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, while certain species can be tracked.

This suggests wildlife will have a larger purpose than simply appearing beside roads or in swamps.

Red Dead Redemption 2 showed how effectively animals could make different regions feel distinct. Leonida gives Rockstar an opportunity to take that philosophy into a modern setting.

The Everglades inspired areas, beaches and northern wilderness can each support their own ecosystems. That should make leaving Vice City feel worthwhile rather than simply creating longer drives between missions.

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms Can Hit Leonida

Florida would not feel entirely convincing without unpredictable weather.

Rockstar has confirmed hurricanes and tropical storms in GTA 6, alongside a weather system that can affect specific areas of the map rather than applying identical conditions everywhere.

That could create striking differences across Leonida.

Players might encounter severe weather in one region while conditions elsewhere remain comparatively calm. Rain also leaves wet surfaces and puddles behind, meaning the environment can continue reflecting a storm after the clouds have moved on.

Under suitable conditions, rainbows can also appear.

These details may sound cosmetic, but persistent weather can transform familiar locations. A bright coastal road can feel completely different beneath dark clouds and heavy rain.

Rockstar has not detailed exactly how severe storms affect missions, traffic or driving, so those elements remain open questions.

GTA 6’s NPCs Are Designed to Look Less Repetitive

Leonida’s human population is receiving similar attention.

GTA 6 NPCs feature a broader variety of body shapes and distinctive physical characteristics. Clothing is also designed with more variety, helping crowds avoid the repeated appearance common in large open-world games.

This could matter enormously in Vice City.

Rockstar’s trailers already show beaches, clubs and streets packed with people. Dense crowds only remain convincing when players do not constantly notice the same faces and bodies being recycled.

Greater visual diversity should make each district feel more natural.

It also supports Rockstar’s wider goal. Leonida is not supposed to feel populated by generic background characters. Its residents are part of the identity of the place.

Players Will Have Plenty to Do Away From the Main Story

The new information also paints a clearer picture of GTA 6 activities.

Reported options include base jumping, scuba diving and mini golf, alongside other recreational activities spread throughout Leonida.

These diversions serve an important purpose in Grand Theft Auto.

GTA works best when players temporarily forget about their next mission and become distracted by the world around them. Rockstar appears to be designing Leonida with exactly that behaviour in mind.

A drive across the state can lead to wildlife, extreme weather, a new activity or a location worth exploring.

That unpredictability is often what separates a memorable open world from a large map filled with icons.

Florida’s Contradictions Are Central to GTA 6

Game Informer’s feature places particular emphasis on Florida itself.

The real state contains striking contradictions. Protected wilderness exists beside luxury developments. Retirement communities coexist with nightlife and celebrity culture. Wealth, tourism, natural beauty and eccentric behaviour regularly occupy the same space.

That makes Florida unusually suitable for Grand Theft Auto’s style of satire.

Rockstar does not need to invent every absurdity from scratch. Modern Florida already provides plenty of inspiration.

Leonida appears designed to exaggerate those recognizable elements while preserving enough authenticity for the setting to feel believable.

That balance may be GTA 6’s greatest challenge.

Leonida Could Be GTA 6’s Real Star

Lucia and Jason remain at the heart of the story, but the latest information makes it increasingly difficult to view Leonida as merely their backdrop.

Rockstar is combining a map reportedly around twice GTA 5’s size with more accessible interiors, over 170 animal species, localized weather, hurricanes, diverse NPCs and a substantial range of activities.

Each system matters on its own. Together, they reveal Rockstar’s larger objective.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is trying to create a state that continues doing interesting things even when the player is not following a mission marker.

That is a much harder task than simply making the map bigger.

Vice City will undoubtedly provide the neon skyline that attracts much of the early attention. Yet the countryside, wetlands, wildlife and strange communities beyond the city may ultimately be what gives GTA 6 its identity.

After years of speculation about how large Rockstar’s next open world would be, the more interesting answer is finally emerging.

Leonida is not just large. Rockstar wants it to feel alive.
