GTA 6 has received a PEGI 18 classification, and the detailed content description provides one of the clearest pictures yet of just how far Rockstar Games is taking the adult themes of its next Grand Theft Auto.
An 18 rating itself is hardly surprising. Grand Theft Auto has spent decades dealing with crime, violence, drugs and sexual themes. The more interesting information comes from the specific examples provided alongside the classification.
Those details include graphic injuries, drug use controlled directly by the player, sexual content, nudity and casino gambling.
Rockstar, it seems, has little interest in making GTA 6 a softer entry in the series.
GTA 6’s Violence Can Include Decapitation and Dismemberment
The rating describes GTA 6 violence as frequent and realistic, with players able to attack civilians as well as hostile characters.
Certain weapons can cause particularly severe injuries.
The PEGI description specifically identifies decapitation and dismemberment as possible outcomes during combat. Blood effects are also prominent.
This level of detail may remind players of Red Dead Redemption 2, where Rockstar developed an unusually sophisticated damage system. Different weapons produced visibly different injuries, giving combat considerably more physical impact than GTA 5.
GTA 6 appears capable of bringing some of that technology into a modern setting.
The difference could be significant. Leonida contains dense urban environments, crowded public spaces and much heavier vehicle traffic than Red Dead Redemption 2’s frontier.
Animals Can Also Be Harmed
GTA 6’s enormous wildlife population is covered by the classification too.
Recent information indicates that Leonida contains more than 170 animal species. The rating confirms players can harm and kill animals during gameplay.
However, violence involving animals is reportedly shown with less graphic detail than violence against human characters.
That distinction is worth noting because wildlife appears to play a much larger role in GTA 6 than in GTA 5.
Alligators, flamingos, monkeys, sharks, dolphins, manatees and many other creatures populate Leonida’s varied environments. Some animals can reportedly be tracked, while categories such as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary suggest exploration may be tied to wildlife discovery.
Cocaine Can Be Used Directly From the Player’s Inventory
One of the most notable revelations concerns drug use in GTA 6.
According to the rating information, drug consumption is not restricted to cutscenes or specific scripted missions.
Players can reportedly obtain drugs and access them directly through their inventory. Cocaine is specifically mentioned.
That suggests drug use may function as an interactive free-roam mechanic rather than simply appearing as part of GTA 6’s criminal storyline.
Rockstar has experimented with similar interactions before. GTA 5 allowed certain protagonists to smoke marijuana or use other substances in specific contexts. However, an inventory-based system would give players considerably more control over when those interactions occur.
Exactly what effect cocaine or other substances have on gameplay remains unclear.
The rating establishes their presence and use, but it does not explain whether they alter character statistics, produce visual effects or interact with other gameplay systems.
GTA 6 Contains Nudity and Sexual Content
The PEGI information also confirms sexual content and nudity in GTA 6.
Strip clubs return, continuing a feature that has appeared in previous Grand Theft Auto games. Private dances reportedly allow physical interaction with dancers, while other scenes contain sexual themes and nudity.
This is familiar territory for the franchise.
The major difference is presentation. GTA 6 has been developed for considerably more capable hardware than the platforms GTA 5 originally targeted in 2013.
Characters now feature far more detailed faces, clothing, hair and animation. As a result, mature scenes can naturally appear more convincing than comparable material from earlier entries.
That increased visual realism is another factor behind the adult classification.
Casino Gambling Is Also Included
The rating details reportedly include casino gambling as well.
Players can participate in games of chance using in-game currency.
This is particularly interesting because casinos have played an increasingly visible role in modern Grand Theft Auto. GTA Online eventually opened the Diamond Casino & Resort, allowing players to participate in several gambling activities.
GTA 6 could integrate similar activities directly into Leonida’s single-player world.
The exact range of casino games has not been fully explained through the rating information, so it remains unclear how substantial this part of the game will be.
In-Game Purchases Are Mentioned Too
The classification also references in-game purchases.
That descriptor does not, by itself, explain Rockstar’s monetization plans.
It should therefore not be interpreted as confirmation that GTA 6’s single-player campaign will sell gameplay items or currency directly to players.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise already has an established online business model through GTA Online and Shark Cards. A future online component could account for the descriptor, but Rockstar has not yet provided the full details needed to draw a firm conclusion.
For now, the rating confirms only that purchases are associated with the product in some form.
Strong Language Remains Part of Grand Theft Auto
Unsurprisingly, GTA 6 contains extensive strong language.
The rating also refers to discriminatory language appearing within some fictional television and radio content.
That fits Rockstar’s established approach to media satire.
Grand Theft Auto’s radio stations, advertisements and television programmes have long served as tools for parodying politics, celebrity culture, consumerism and contemporary media.
GTA 6 appears ready to continue that tradition while adding social media to the mix.
PEGI 18 Was Inevitable, but the Details Matter
No one seriously expected Grand Theft Auto 6 to receive a mild age classification.
The value of the PEGI information lies elsewhere.
It provides clues about how Rockstar’s mature themes actually function inside the game.
Cocaine being available from an inventory suggests more player control. Detailed injuries point toward an upgraded combat system. Casino games indicate additional activities, while the descriptions of sexual content and strong language confirm that Rockstar is not abandoning the adult tone that has defined Grand Theft Auto.
Those details also fit what the studio has been saying about Leonida.
GTA 6 is being designed as a heightened version of contemporary America. Rockstar wants the world to feel recognizable while pushing its violence, excess, humor and criminal culture beyond ordinary reality.
The PEGI 18 classification confirms just how firmly the studio intends to stay within that territory.
GTA 6 may be Rockstar’s most technically sophisticated game yet, but underneath the new technology, Leonida remains unmistakably Grand Theft Auto.
