GTA 6 Preorder Interest Is Heavily Skewed Toward PS5, but Xbox Pushes Back on the Numbers

GTA 6 preorder interest appears to be leaning heavily toward PlayStation 5, according to affiliate data that has triggered an unusual public response from Microsoft.

Data shared through IGN’s commerce affiliate program indicated that PlayStation 5 activity for Grand Theft Auto VI was outperforming Xbox by roughly eight to one. An earlier version of the report placed the ratio at six to one before the figure was updated.

On the surface, that looks like a remarkable advantage for Sony ahead of what is expected to be one of 2026’s biggest game launches.

There is an important catch, however. These figures do not represent Rockstar’s complete preorder numbers, nor do they provide a direct view of purchases made through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has now responded, arguing that the data should not be treated as evidence of actual preorder sales.

Microsoft Challenges the GTA 6 PS5 Versus Xbox Numbers

Following discussion around the reported difference, Microsoft issued a statement disputing how the figures were being interpreted.

The company said the numbers did not represent preorder data and pointed instead to strong order activity on its own platform. Microsoft also argued that affiliate clicks should not be confused with confirmed purchases.

That distinction is important.

Affiliate programs can track activity generated when readers follow retail links. Such information can provide a useful indication of consumer interest, but clicking a product does not necessarily mean that a customer completed the transaction.

The data also covers only consumers passing through those particular affiliate links. Millions of players can preorder directly from console storefronts, Rockstar, retailers or other channels without ever appearing in that sample.

As a result, an eight to one PS5 advantage should not be interpreted as meaning eight copies of GTA 6 are being sold on PS5 for every Xbox copy.

The real platform split remains unknown.

PS5 Still Has Several Advantages Heading Into GTA 6

Even with those limitations, there are understandable reasons why GTA 6 on PS5 could generate more visible preorder activity.

Sony has been marketing Rockstar’s game aggressively. Its campaign has included prominent PlayStation Store placement and even GTA 6 themed presentation inside the PS5 interface.

Rockstar and PlayStation have also promoted features tied to Sony’s hardware, including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, controller audio and PS5 3D audio support.

The marketing relationship does not make GTA 6 a PlayStation exclusive. The game is launching simultaneously on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nevertheless, repeated PlayStation branding around such a major release can influence how casual buyers associate the game with a particular console.

PS5 also has a larger reported hardware base than Xbox Series X|S, which naturally gives Sony access to a bigger pool of potential customers.

That alone makes a perfectly even platform split unlikely.

Physical Buying Habits May Distort the Comparison

There is another factor worth considering: physical software.

Affiliate commerce data often has stronger visibility into retail purchases than direct digital transactions. That matters because the PlayStation and Xbox audiences do not necessarily buy games in the same way.

Xbox has developed an increasingly digital ecosystem, helped by Game Pass and Microsoft’s digital storefront. Sony has also seen digital purchases dominate software sales, but boxed PlayStation releases remain prominent at major retailers.

GTA 6 makes the situation even stranger because some retail versions are being sold as code in box products rather than conventional discs.

In other words, retail link activity provides only one window into a much larger market.

Microsoft’s objection therefore has some factual basis: affiliate traffic and completed global preorders are two different measurements.

At the same time, the size of the reported gap makes the data difficult to dismiss completely as an indicator of interest. It suggests that among the customers represented in this particular sample, PS5 demand is considerably stronger.

GTA 6 Is Already Showing Strong Premium Edition Demand

The platform discussion is not the only interesting trend emerging from GTA 6 preorders.

Take Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously described early preorders as exceptional and said demand has been skewing toward the more expensive edition of the game.

On PlayStation, the $99.99 Ultimate Edition has also been tracking ahead of the cheaper $79.99 Standard Edition in preorder rankings.

Zelnick offered a straightforward explanation for that pattern. The most enthusiastic customers are often the people willing to preorder months before release, and those same buyers may be more inclined to choose a premium package.

That makes early preorder statistics inherently unusual. They capture dedicated fans first rather than providing a perfect picture of the much broader audience expected to buy GTA 6 after launch.

Sony Is Treating GTA 6 Like a Major PS5 Event

Whatever the final sales split looks like, Sony clearly understands the importance of Grand Theft Auto VI to the remaining years of the PS5 generation.

GTA 6 will not launch on PS4, meaning millions of players still using previous generation hardware face an upgrade if they want to play Rockstar’s new open world on release day.

That creates a major hardware opportunity for both Sony and Microsoft.

For PlayStation, GTA 6 arrives at a particularly useful moment. A game with this level of mainstream recognition can persuade consumers who have delayed upgrading far more effectively than a typical new release.

Microsoft has the same opportunity with Xbox Series X|S, which helps explain why the company would want to challenge a narrative suggesting that Xbox demand is dramatically lower.

The Real GTA 6 Platform Split Is Still Unknown

The reported eight to one figure makes an eye catching headline, but it needs context.

It measures activity within a particular affiliate ecosystem. It does not reveal Rockstar’s worldwide preorder database, and it cannot account for every purchase made directly through digital storefronts or unrelated retailers.

Microsoft’s response reinforces that point.

Still, the available evidence shows something significant about the battle surrounding GTA 6. Sony is pushing hard to make PlayStation synonymous with Rockstar’s next release, while Microsoft clearly does not want early third party statistics defining Xbox’s position before the game has even launched.

The decisive numbers will come later, when actual sales provide a clearer picture of where the enormous GTA 6 audience chose to play.

Until then, PS5 appears to have a substantial lead within the affiliate data currently available. How closely that reflects the wider market remains an open question.
