GTA 6 Effect Sends PS5 Pro Sales Soaring 348% Despite Sony’s Higher Prices

GTA 6 is still weeks away from release, but Rockstar Games’ blockbuster is already having a measurable impact on console demand. New UK data suggests sales of Sony’s premium PlayStation 5 Pro surged by an extraordinary 348% in a single week following the opening of GTA 6 pre-orders.

The figures come from price-comparison service idealo and offer another indication that some players are upgrading their hardware specifically ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI.

The increase is particularly striking because PlayStation hardware has become more expensive, not cheaper, during 2026.

Normally, higher prices suppress demand. GTA 6 appears capable of pushing in the opposite direction.

PS5 Pro Sales Reportedly Jumped 348% in One Week

According to idealo’s UK data, the PS5 Pro recorded a 348% increase during the week following the launch of GTA 6 pre-orders.

Sony’s cheaper PS5 Slim also benefited, although its reported increase was much smaller at 38%.

The contrast is revealing.

Players preparing specifically for GTA 6 are not necessarily choosing the cheapest console capable of running it. A significant number appear interested in Sony’s most capable PlayStation hardware.

That suggests GTA 6 is functioning as an upgrade trigger rather than simply encouraging people who do not own a current-generation console to buy one.

The GTA 6 Effect Started Before Pre-Orders

This is not the first evidence that Rockstar’s marketing is influencing hardware demand.

Following the GTA 6 Extended Look on August 27, UK PlayStation 5 sales reportedly climbed 33% week over week, while Xbox Series X|S sales increased 34%.

The presentation gave players roughly 27 minutes of new GTA 6 footage, including gameplay, character interactions, vehicles and a much clearer look at Leonida.

Shortly afterward, PS5 Pro inventory became difficult to find at several retailers.

That initial hardware reaction could have been dismissed as a temporary burst of enthusiasm. The newer pre-order data suggests something broader may be happening.

Consumers are beginning to prepare for November.

Why Are Players Choosing PS5 Pro for GTA 6?

The obvious answer is performance.

PS5 Pro is Sony’s highest-specification console and is designed to deliver better image quality and graphical performance than the standard PS5.

For a game as visually demanding as GTA 6, buyers may reasonably assume that the premium console will provide the strongest PlayStation experience.

Rockstar has shown a remarkably dense version of Leonida filled with traffic, crowds, complex lighting, detailed vegetation and extensive environmental simulation.

Some players who have waited more than a decade for a new Grand Theft Auto may simply want the best console available when it launches.

That motivation can be surprisingly strong.

A PS5 Pro Does Not Guarantee GTA 6 at 60 FPS

There is an important limitation for buyers considering an upgrade.

Purchasing a PS5 Pro should not automatically be treated as a route to GTA 6 at 60 FPS.

Current technical discussion indicates that GTA 6 is targeting 30 frames per second on consoles. Rockstar has not promised a 60 FPS performance mode for PS5 Pro.

The game’s challenge is not purely graphics.

Its dense NPC populations, traffic, physics and world simulation can place enormous demands on the CPU. Doubling the frame rate requires the entire game simulation to update twice as quickly, not simply lowering graphical resolution.

PS5 Pro could still deliver better image quality, improved visual settings or more stable presentation. Buyers should simply avoid assuming that the more expensive console automatically means twice the frame rate.

Higher Console Prices Have Not Stopped Demand

The sales surge becomes more unusual when viewed against current hardware pricing.

Console prices traditionally decline as a generation gets older. This generation has moved in the opposite direction in several markets.

Component pressures and wider industry conditions have pushed manufacturers toward price increases, making new hardware a more significant purchase for consumers.

Yet GTA 6 appears capable of convincing some players to spend anyway.

This highlights the unusual commercial position Rockstar occupies. Most publishers need the console installed base to sell their game. GTA 6 may be large enough to expand that installed base itself.

PC Players Face a Different Decision

The absence of an announced PC launch alongside the console versions adds another factor.

GTA 6 launches first on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced an official PC release date.

That leaves PC players with a choice.

They can wait for Rockstar to eventually bring the game to Windows, or purchase a console to play at launch.

Not everyone will make the switch. Previous polling has suggested many dedicated PC players are willing to wait.

However, GTA 6 only needs to persuade a relatively small percentage of its enormous PC audience to generate meaningful additional console sales.

Sony Has Another Advantage Through GTA 6 Hardware

Sony is also strengthening the connection between PlayStation and GTA 6 through official hardware.

The company recently unveiled limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers in black and white.

Both feature Vice City-inspired styling, palm details and distinctive VI branding. They launch alongside the game on November 19.

That collaboration gives Sony an additional way to position PlayStation as the platform associated most closely with GTA 6, even though the game is also launching on Xbox Series X|S.

If consumers already view PS5 Pro as the premium console for GTA 6, branded accessories only reinforce that association.

Xbox Is Benefiting From GTA 6 Too

The effect is not exclusive to Sony.

Earlier UK data showed Xbox Series X|S sales rising 34% around Rockstar’s Extended Look, slightly ahead of PlayStation’s overall percentage increase during that particular week.

That demonstrates GTA 6’s broader ability to stimulate the current console market.

For Microsoft, the game provides a major reason for players still using Xbox One hardware to finally upgrade.

For Sony, however, the extraordinary PS5 Pro increase suggests the game may also encourage upgrades within the existing PS5 audience.

GTA 6 Could Become This Generation’s Biggest Hardware Driver

Major games have always sold consoles.

What makes GTA 6 unusual is the size of the potential audience and the length of time since the previous numbered entry.

GTA 5 launched in 2013. Some players have waited 13 years for Rockstar’s next mainline Grand Theft Auto.

For those consumers, buying new hardware specifically for GTA 6 may feel easier to justify than upgrading for a game that arrives every year.

The reported 348% PS5 Pro spike offers an early glimpse of that effect.

It does not mean every PS5 Pro purchase was made exclusively for GTA 6, and percentage increases can appear especially dramatic when starting from a smaller baseline. Still, the timing is difficult to ignore.

Rockstar’s game is already influencing hardware purchases before anyone has reached Vice City.

When GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, the impact could become considerably larger.

For Sony and Microsoft, that makes GTA 6 more than a software release.

It may be the biggest remaining hardware sales opportunity of the entire console generation.
