The wait for GTA 6 is almost over. After more than a decade without a new numbered Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar Games is preparing to open the gates to Leonida on November 19, 2026.
Years of secrecy have gradually given way to a much clearer picture of the game. Rockstar has revealed more about Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, the return of Vice City and the enormous state surrounding it.
Recent coverage has also exposed surprisingly specific details about wildlife, weather, activities and the adult systems hidden throughout the open world.
Yet Rockstar is still holding back some major answers.
With fewer than 50 days remaining, here is where Grand Theft Auto VI stands.
GTA 6 Launches on November 19, 2026
GTA 6 releases November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The date follows changes to Rockstar’s original launch plans, but the current marketing campaign is now firmly focused on the November release.
There is no announced PS4 or Xbox One version.
PC players face a longer wait. Rockstar has not announced a PC launch date, although the company has historically brought its major games to computers after their console debuts.
GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both followed that pattern.
A GTA 6 PC version therefore seems reasonable to expect eventually, but no specific date should be treated as official until Rockstar provides one.
Lucia and Jason Are More Than a Bonnie and Clyde Pair
The story follows Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a romantic couple whose criminal partnership sits at the centre of GTA 6.
The Bonnie and Clyde comparison is obvious, but Rockstar’s writers have recently provided a more complicated description of the pair.
Lucia wants to change her circumstances. She actively pursues a more secure future and appears prepared to take considerable risks to achieve it.
Jason approaches life differently.
He is more likely to respond to situations as they happen rather than aggressively forcing his own path.
Rockstar deliberately designed both characters with flaws. They can make intelligent decisions and terrible ones. They can be resilient while remaining vulnerable.
Most importantly, they can learn from each other.
Vice City Is Only One Part of Leonida
Vice City returns in GTA 6, but players will explore far more than Rockstar’s fictional Miami.
The city sits inside Leonida, a much larger state inspired by Florida.
Rockstar has shown beaches, wetlands, highways, islands, rural communities and wilderness alongside the dense urban centre.
Mount Kalaga National Park is among the major locations outside Vice City, while other areas take inspiration from the Florida Keys and Everglades.
Recent reporting describes Leonida as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map.
Size is only part of Rockstar’s goal, however. The studio is placing greater emphasis on interiors and giving players more reasons to stop and explore rather than simply drive between mission markers.
More Than 170 Animal Species Live in GTA 6
One of the biggest surprises is the scale of GTA 6’s wildlife system.
Leonida reportedly contains more than 170 animal species.
Alligators, flamingos, pelicans, monkeys, sharks, dolphins and manatees are among the creatures identified so far. Cats and dogs also populate more developed areas.
Wild monkeys are particularly interesting because they have a real-world basis in Florida.
Some animals can reportedly be tracked, while wildlife categories include Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.
The influence of Red Dead Redemption 2 is clear. Rockstar appears to be applying lessons from its western ecosystem to a modern world where cities and wilderness frequently collide.
Hurricanes Can Move Across Leonida
Florida’s climate is another important part of the simulation.
GTA 6 features hurricanes and tropical storms alongside a localized weather system.
Rain does not necessarily cover the entire map at once. Different regions can experience different conditions.
Storms also leave visible consequences.
Roads stay wet, puddles remain after rain and rainbows can appear as conditions improve. Wind interacts with vegetation, water, hair and environmental debris.
Rockstar has not fully explained whether hurricanes alter missions, traffic patterns or NPC routines. Those details remain unknown.
Still, the weather system should make familiar locations look and feel different depending on when players visit them.
GTA 6’s PEGI Rating Revealed Adult Gameplay Details
A briefly published PEGI 18 listing for GTA 6 unexpectedly revealed several specific gameplay interactions.
The page was later removed.
According to the published description, certain weapons can cause decapitation and dismemberment. Drug use is described as frequent, while cocaine can reportedly be accessed through the player’s inventory.
The rating also referenced nudity, sexual content, gambling and in-game purchases.
The inventory detail is particularly notable because it suggests drugs can function as free-roam items rather than appearing only in scripted sequences.
Rockstar has not separately explained every mechanic described by PEGI, so those specific details should continue to be attributed to the deleted rating page.
Leonida Is Packed With Optional Activities
Rockstar wants exploration to feel rewarding even when players ignore the story.
Reported GTA 6 activities include scuba diving, mini golf and base jumping.
Casino gambling also appears in the age-rating information, while wildlife tracking gives players another reason to leave Vice City.
Even taxis reportedly receive additional detail, with shared rides involving other passengers appearing among recent information.
None of these features individually transforms Grand Theft Auto.
Together, however, they make Leonida feel less like a giant mission hub and more like a place designed to distract the player.
Rockstar Has Researched Florida Extensively
That sense of place did not come entirely from internet research.
Rockstar reportedly sent teams into real-world Florida while developing GTA 6.
Researchers visited nightlife venues and studied different communities. The team also spent time around police and spoke with people connected to criminal environments.
The purpose was not to recreate Florida exactly.
Rockstar uses reality as a foundation before compressing, rearranging and exaggerating it into Grand Theft Auto’s fictional world.
That process allows Leonida to feel recognizable without becoming a geographical copy.
GTA 6 Will Keep Rockstar’s Social Satire
Rockstar’s writers have also addressed concerns that the studio might soften the series’ humor.
GTA 6 remains heavily satirical.
Leonida is designed as an exaggerated reflection of contemporary America. Social media culture plays a particularly important role.
Official footage has shown influencers, vertical videos and bizarre public incidents circulating online.
This gives Rockstar another layer to parody.
The joke is no longer only about an absurd event. It can also be about how millions of people react to that event through their phones.
Some of GTA 6’s Biggest Questions Remain Unanswered
For all the new information, Rockstar still has plenty left to reveal.
The company has not fully explained character progression, the complete customization system or what happens to GTA Online once the new generation of Grand Theft Auto begins.
PC timing remains unknown.
Performance is another major question. Final resolution and frame-rate options across PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox hardware still need clearer official details.
Rockstar is also keeping major story developments under wraps.
That restraint is probably deliberate.
The 13-Year Wait Is Almost Finished
GTA 5 arrived in September 2013.
By the time Grand Theft Auto 6 launches, more than 13 years will have passed between numbered entries.
Rockstar used part of that period to create Red Dead Redemption 2 and continuously expand GTA Online. GTA 6 now has to bring lessons from both projects into a new generation.
The result appears to combine GTA’s speed and chaos with the environmental detail Rockstar developed for Red Dead Redemption 2.
Whether Leonida lives up to more than a decade of expectations will only become clear when players finally enter it.
For years, GTA 6 felt impossibly distant.
Now the countdown is measured in weeks.
