PS5 Gets Major AI Graphics Upgrade Ahead of GTA 6, but Rockstar Support Is Not Confirmed Yet

Sony has introduced a major new graphics technology for the standard PlayStation 5, just weeks before GTA 6 becomes one of the biggest technical tests the console has faced.

The technology is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. It brings AI-assisted image upscaling to the original PS5 and aims to improve detail and visual stability without requiring players to upgrade to a PS5 Pro.

For GTA 6 players, the timing immediately raises an obvious question.

Could Rockstar Games use QSSR to improve GTA 6 on the standard PS5?

It is certainly possible from a technical availability standpoint. However, neither Rockstar nor Sony has confirmed QSSR support for Grand Theft Auto VI.

What Is QSSR on PS5?

QSSR is Sony’s new AI-assisted reconstruction technology designed specifically for the base PS5.

The system analyzes rendered game imagery and attempts to reconstruct a cleaner, more detailed output. In practical terms, developers can render a game at a lower internal resolution and use reconstruction to produce a sharper final image.

This is particularly useful when a game is demanding enough that rendering every frame at a high native resolution would significantly reduce performance.

Modern games increasingly rely on techniques like this.

Sony developed QSSR through Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. The technology uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation optimized around the capabilities of the original PS5 hardware.

PS5 Pro Still Has the More Advanced PSSR Technology

The idea will sound familiar to anyone following the PS5 Pro.

Sony’s upgraded console uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, better known as PSSR.

PSSR also uses machine-learning techniques to reconstruct higher-quality images from lower-resolution input. Sony designed it as one of the defining features of the PS5 Pro.

QSSR brings a related concept to the standard PS5, but it is not identical in capability.

The original console lacks the dedicated machine-learning performance available on PS5 Pro. Sony therefore needed a lighter solution that could operate within the older hardware’s limitations.

QSSR is that solution.

Sony continues to position PSSR as the higher-end option, while QSSR provides standard PS5 owners with some of the same fundamental benefits.

Marvel’s Wolverine Is One of the First QSSR Games

Sony is not presenting QSSR as a future experiment.

The technology is already entering games.

Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei from Sucker Punch Productions are the first announced titles to support QSSR.

Both receive the technology as an additional graphics option on standard PS5 hardware.

Insomniac says QSSR improves pixel-level clarity and stability across Wolverine’s environments. Sucker Punch has similarly highlighted improvements to fine character and environmental detail.

This matters because those are precisely the kinds of problems image reconstruction needs to solve.

Fine geometry, hair, vegetation, distant objects and movement can expose weaknesses in conventional upscaling methods. AI-assisted reconstruction aims to retain more detail while reducing instability between frames.

Why QSSR Could Matter So Much for GTA 6

Few upcoming games appear better suited to this technology than Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar is building an exceptionally dense open world.

Vice City contains crowded streets, traffic, pedestrians, reflective surfaces, complex lighting and detailed buildings. The wider state of Leonida adds wetlands, beaches, wildlife and long viewing distances.

All of that places pressure on the GPU.

An effective reconstruction system could allow Rockstar to reduce internal rendering resolution while preserving a cleaner final presentation.

That does not magically create additional CPU performance or guarantee a higher frame rate. It can, however, help developers make better use of a limited graphics budget.

For a game as demanding as GTA 6, that could be valuable.

QSSR Does Not Mean GTA 6 Will Suddenly Run at 60 FPS

This distinction is important.

AI upscaling and frame rate are not the same thing.

QSSR can reduce the amount of GPU work needed to produce a high-resolution image. However, GTA 6 also appears to rely heavily on complex simulation, NPC behavior, traffic, physics and environmental systems.

Those tasks can place substantial pressure on the CPU.

If GTA 6 is limited by CPU performance in demanding areas, improved image reconstruction alone would not automatically turn a 30 FPS experience into 60 FPS.

Rockstar has not confirmed the final frame-rate targets for every PlayStation configuration.

Claims that QSSR guarantees a 60 FPS GTA 6 mode should therefore be treated cautiously.

GTA 6 QSSR Support Has Not Been Announced

The most important qualification is simple: Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 QSSR support.

Sony says the technology will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers. That means Rockstar could potentially use it.

It does not mean Rockstar will.

Developers still need to integrate and test reconstruction technology within their own rendering pipelines. GTA 6 may also use Rockstar’s own temporal reconstruction techniques or another solution chosen specifically for RAGE, the studio’s proprietary engine.

Until Rockstar discusses the PS5 graphics modes, anything more specific remains speculation.

PS5 Pro Could Still Offer a Noticeable GTA 6 Advantage

The arrival of QSSR does not make the PS5 Pro irrelevant.

Sony’s premium console has more powerful graphics hardware and access to the more capable PSSR technology.

If Rockstar fully supports the PS5 Pro, that additional GPU performance could potentially be used for higher resolutions, improved ray tracing, greater visual settings or more stable image quality.

Exactly what GTA 6 will do with the hardware remains unknown.

The important development is that owners of the original PS5 now have access to a more sophisticated reconstruction option than they did before.

Sony Has Given Rockstar Another Option for GTA 6

QSSR arrives at an interesting moment for PlayStation.

The standard PS5 is approaching six years on the market, yet it remains one of the primary platforms for Rockstar’s most technically ambitious game.

Sony’s answer is not simply new hardware.

Software and AI-assisted rendering are becoming increasingly important tools for extending what existing consoles can deliver.

For standard PS5 owners planning to play GTA 6, that is encouraging.

There is still no confirmation that Rockstar will implement QSSR, and the technology should not be mistaken for a guaranteed GTA 6 graphics or performance upgrade.

But Sony has now placed the option in developers’ hands.

If Rockstar decides to use it, the standard PS5 could have another valuable tool for presenting the crowded streets, distant skylines and enormous landscapes of Leonida with greater clarity.

For a console preparing to run GTA 6, every bit of graphics headroom matters.
