Xbox Responds to GTA 6 PS5 Preorder Dominance Claims With Its Own Sales Data

Meta description: Xbox responds to claims that GTA 6 preorders heavily favor PS5, saying its share matches the console market and records are already falling.

Microsoft has responded to reports suggesting GTA 6 preorders are overwhelmingly favoring PlayStation 5, arguing that Xbox demand is exactly where the company expects it to be.

The discussion began after IGN published data from purchases attributed through its affiliate links. Those figures showed a substantial advantage for GTA 6 on PS5, with PlayStation accounting for the large majority of tracked orders.

Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball has now offered important context from Microsoft’s side.

According to Ball, Xbox’s share of Grand Theft Auto VI preorders is broadly consistent with Xbox’s share of the current console market. He also says the game is already breaking preorder records on Microsoft’s platform.

In other words, PS5 may be selling more copies overall, but Microsoft does not view the gap as evidence that GTA 6 is underperforming on Xbox.

IGN’s Data Showed a Major PS5 Advantage

IGN’s original analysis came from affiliate purchasing data rather than complete worldwide preorder figures supplied by Rockstar Games.

Among customers whose purchases were attributed through IGN’s retail links, the split heavily favored PlayStation.

At one stage, the reported difference was approximately eight PS5 purchases for every Xbox purchase. That understandably generated headlines suggesting that PlayStation was dominating GTA 6 preorders.

However, affiliate data measures a specific group of consumers.

It does not automatically include someone who opens the PlayStation Store directly on a PS5 and places an order. The same applies to Xbox owners buying through Microsoft’s console storefront.

Retailers and other purchasing channels can also sit outside the sample.

That does not make the affiliate data meaningless. It provides a genuine indication of purchasing behavior among those customers. It simply cannot be treated as Rockstar’s complete global sales breakdown.

Xbox Says Its Share Matches the Console Market

Ball’s response introduces a different measurement.

Microsoft has access to actual purchasing information inside the Xbox ecosystem. According to the executive, the platform’s share of GTA 6 preorders is roughly equivalent to its share of the console market.

That is an important distinction because PS5 and Xbox Series X|S do not have equally sized installed bases.

Sony has sold substantially more current generation consoles. As a result, a larger percentage of GTA 6 sales going to PlayStation would be expected even if owners of both platforms were buying the game at comparable rates.

If Xbox represents a smaller percentage of the available console audience, matching that percentage in GTA 6 preorders would suggest relatively normal purchasing behavior among Xbox owners.

The raw totals could still look dramatically different.

That is where much of the confusion comes from.

GTA 6 Is Apparently Breaking Xbox Records Anyway

Microsoft is not merely arguing that Xbox performance is acceptable.

Ball says Grand Theft Auto VI is already breaking preorder records on Xbox.

He also expects additional records to fall as the November launch approaches.

That provides a useful reminder of the enormous scale surrounding Rockstar’s next game. GTA 6 does not need Xbox to outsell PlayStation in order to become one of the largest releases Microsoft’s platform has ever seen.

A smaller percentage of an enormous launch can still represent millions of customers.

The same principle applies across the wider entertainment business. Market share and absolute performance measure different things.

For Microsoft, the more relevant question is whether GTA 6 is generating exceptional engagement from the Xbox audience. Ball’s comments suggest that it is.

Why GTA 6 Naturally Has a Bigger PlayStation Audience

The hardware market provides only part of the explanation.

Sony has also built a strong association between GTA 6 and PS5.

Rockstar’s promotional campaign has frequently been presented alongside PlayStation branding, and Sony has highlighted platform features such as DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D audio.

That does not make GTA 6 exclusive to PlayStation. The game launches on Xbox Series X|S at the same time.

However, marketing can influence customers who own more than one console.

If someone has both a PS5 and an Xbox Series X, the decision may come down to controller preference, existing friends, account history or simply which platform they associate most closely with the game.

Sony’s larger audience gives it an advantage before any of those factors enter the equation.

The Preorder Audience Is Not the Final GTA 6 Audience

There is another reason to avoid drawing sweeping conclusions from early numbers.

People who preorder months before release represent a specific type of customer.

They are often dedicated fans who have already decided to buy the game regardless of reviews or launch day discussion. Some may also be more likely to purchase premium editions.

The broader audience arrives later.

Millions of players could wait until November. Others may purchase a new console specifically for GTA 6, while some will wait for hardware bundles or holiday promotions.

That means the eventual GTA 6 PS5 versus Xbox sales split could differ from the current preorder picture.

Preorders are an early signal, not the final result.

GTA 6 Could Trigger a Major Console Upgrade Cycle

Both Sony and Microsoft have another reason to care deeply about Rockstar’s launch.

GTA 6 is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One.

Players who have remained on previous generation hardware will therefore need to upgrade if they want to experience Rockstar’s new Vice City at launch.

That gives Grand Theft Auto VI unusual influence over console hardware sales.

Many cross generation releases have allowed consumers to postpone buying a PS5 or Xbox Series console. GTA 6 removes that option for one of gaming’s largest audiences.

Sony will hope those customers choose PS5. Microsoft will want the same upgrade to happen within the Xbox ecosystem.

The November release could therefore become one of the most important hardware sales moments remaining in this console generation.

The Two GTA 6 Preorder Stories Can Both Be True

The apparent disagreement between the numbers is less contradictory than it first appears.

IGN’s affiliate data can show a major PS5 advantage among purchases attributed through its network. At the same time, Microsoft’s internal data can show Xbox capturing a percentage of total preorders consistent with its smaller position in the console market.

Meanwhile, GTA 6 can still break Xbox preorder records.

All three statements measure different things.

The complete picture will remain unclear unless Rockstar or Take Two publishes detailed platform sales figures after release.

Until then, one conclusion is reasonably safe: GTA 6 demand is enormous on both current generation console platforms, even if PlayStation ultimately accounts for a much larger number of copies.

For Microsoft, that appears to be enough to make GTA 6 a record setting Xbox launch.

For Sony, its larger console audience gives PS5 a natural advantage in the battle for overall sales.

The real numbers will become considerably more meaningful once Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.
