GTA 6 is approaching, and for players without a current-generation console, one question is becoming increasingly important: should you buy a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox?
Rockstar Games will release Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. With no PC version announced for launch, console hardware remains the only confirmed way to enter Leonida on day one.
On paper, the decision looks straightforward. In practice, there are four realistic options: the standard PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and cheaper Xbox Series S.
Each can run GTA 6. They are not equally attractive purchases.
PS5 and Xbox Series X Should Deliver Comparable GTA 6 Experiences
The standard PS5 and Xbox Series X occupy similar performance territory. Both use AMD-based hardware, fast SSD storage and processors designed for the current console generation.
That makes either machine a sensible choice for GTA 6.
Rockstar has not announced a detailed comparison showing different resolutions or graphical settings between the two systems. Therefore, claims that one standard console will dramatically outperform the other should be treated cautiously until technical analysis becomes available.
There is one interesting clue, however.
Rockstar confirmed that footage from its recent GTA 6 Extended Look was captured on PlayStation 5. That demonstrates the visual experience Rockstar is already achieving on Sony’s standard hardware rather than requiring the more expensive PS5 Pro.
For players worried that a normal PS5 may be inadequate, that is reassuring.
PS5 Currently Has a Major Price Advantage
Hardware price changes the calculation considerably.
PCMag’s US comparison lists a 1TB PlayStation 5 at $649.99, compared with $799.99 for an equivalent Xbox Series X. The digital PS5 is listed at $599.99, while Microsoft’s all-digital Series X sits at $749.99.
That creates a substantial gap before GTA 6 itself is added to the purchase.
If a buyer wants a machine primarily for GTA 6, spending considerably more for similar base-level performance is difficult to justify. Existing Xbox owners have little reason to switch, of course, but newcomers face a different calculation.
Price matters.
Console costs could also change before November, so anyone planning a purchase should compare current retail prices rather than relying exclusively on launch-era figures.
PS5 Pro Could Offer the Best Console Version of GTA 6
Players who care more about image quality than value have another option: PS5 Pro.
Sony’s upgraded machine provides considerably more graphics capability than the standard PS5 and includes technology designed to improve image quality in demanding games.
That makes it the obvious candidate for the most technically ambitious console version of GTA 6 at launch.
However, there is an important limitation.
Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA 6 will run at 60 frames per second on PS5 Pro. Nor has the developer published final resolution targets or detailed Pro-specific graphics modes.
Players should therefore avoid buying the machine solely on the assumption that it guarantees GTA 6 at 60 FPS.
It may deliver sharper visuals, improved effects or a steadier performance profile. We simply do not know the final configuration yet.
What About GTA 6 at 30 FPS?
Frame rate has become one of the largest technical discussions surrounding GTA 6.
PCMag expects the standard consoles to target 30 frames per second. That expectation is understandable considering the density Rockstar is attempting to deliver, but it should not be confused with a final Rockstar specification.
GTA 6 is doing far more than rendering detailed streets.
Vice City and the wider state of Leonida contain heavy traffic, crowds, wildlife, detailed interiors and numerous systems operating simultaneously. Those elements can place enormous pressure on the CPU, an area where PS5 Pro does not receive the same dramatic upgrade as its graphics hardware.
A locked and carefully paced 30 FPS experience may therefore be Rockstar’s priority on standard consoles.
Xbox Series S Is the Cheapest Way Into GTA 6
At the opposite end sits the Xbox Series S.
PCMag lists the machine at $499.99, making it the least expensive currently supported console for GTA 6. Microsoft designed Series S around lower rendering targets than Series X, but it still runs current-generation software.
That makes it an interesting option for players who simply want access to GTA 6 without paying for premium visual quality.
There will almost certainly be compromises. Lower resolution, reduced graphical settings or other visual adjustments would not be surprising.
Yet Rockstar has a long history of squeezing ambitious open worlds onto modest hardware. GTA 5 originally launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while Red Dead Redemption 2 delivered remarkable results on the previous console generation.
Series S will be a fascinating technical test.
Should PC Players Wait?
Rockstar currently lists GTA 6 only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC edition has not been officially announced.
History makes a later PC release plausible. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both reached computers after their console debuts.
Still, previous release patterns are not confirmation.
Anyone determined to play GTA 6 on November 19 will need one of the supported consoles unless Rockstar changes its announced platform plans before launch.
A future PC version could eventually become the technically strongest edition, particularly on high-end hardware. Waiting for an unannounced product, however, means accepting an unknown release window.
So, Which Console Is Best for GTA 6?
For someone purchasing hardware specifically for Grand Theft Auto VI, the standard PS5 currently presents the strongest balance.
It costs less than the comparable Xbox Series X in PCMag’s US pricing comparison, Rockstar has already demonstrated GTA 6 footage running on the hardware, and it avoids the premium attached to PS5 Pro.
For enthusiasts who want the strongest potential console presentation and are comfortable paying more, PS5 Pro is the more ambitious choice. However, buyers should wait for Rockstar’s final technical details before assuming it will provide 60 FPS.
Xbox Series S serves a completely different audience. It is the budget route into Leonida, with graphical compromises likely to accompany its lower price and hardware specifications.
Xbox Series X remains a capable option, particularly for players already invested in Microsoft’s ecosystem. Yet for someone starting from zero and buying a console mainly for GTA 6, its higher current price makes the recommendation harder.
The simplest answer is therefore clear: PS5 offers the best overall balance for most new GTA 6 buyers, while PS5 Pro is the premium option.
Now Rockstar just needs to show us exactly how each version runs.
