Meta description: GTA 6 preorders reportedly favor PS5, but Xbox says demand is breaking records and its preorder share matches its console market position.
GTA 6 preorders are reportedly leaning heavily toward PlayStation 5, adding another chapter to the competition between Sony and Microsoft ahead of Rockstar Games’ biggest release in years.
Sources familiar with Xbox’s performance reportedly acknowledge that early demand for Grand Theft Auto VI is weighted toward PS5. However, Microsoft is pushing back against suggestions that the split represents unexpectedly weak interest from Xbox players.
Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball responded publicly to the reports, saying the company is very happy with GTA 6 preorder performance. According to Ball, the game is already breaking preorder records on Xbox.
More importantly, Microsoft’s internal analysis reportedly shows that Xbox’s share of GTA 6 preorders is broadly consistent with its position in the current console market.
That distinction changes how the early numbers should be interpreted.
Xbox Says GTA 6 Is Already Breaking Records
Ball’s response arrived after reports suggested that GTA 6 PS5 preorders were significantly ahead of Xbox Series X|S.
Rather than disputing that PlayStation currently represents the larger share, the Xbox executive focused on how GTA 6 is performing relative to Microsoft’s existing console audience.
He said the game is breaking Xbox records and predicted that additional records will fall as the launch approaches.
That is an important point because raw platform comparisons do not exist in a vacuum. PS5 has a considerably larger installed hardware base than Xbox Series X|S. A higher number of PlayStation preorders would therefore be expected even if players on both platforms showed similar levels of interest.
Microsoft’s position is essentially that Xbox GTA 6 preorders should be measured against the size of the Xbox audience rather than directly against PlayStation’s total.
It is a reasonable distinction, although the exact global preorder split remains private.
PS5 Has a Much Larger Console Audience
The size of the current console market provides essential context.
PS5 sales had passed 95 million units by June 30, 2026, while estimates have placed the combined Xbox Series X and Series S installed base much lower.
That means Rockstar has access to a substantially larger potential audience on PlayStation before marketing, pricing or platform specific preferences are considered.
If the hardware gap is somewhere around two or three PlayStation consoles for every current generation Xbox, a similar difference in GTA 6 sales would not necessarily indicate that Xbox owners are avoiding the game.
It could simply reflect the number of consoles available.
That makes Microsoft’s claim particularly interesting. If Xbox’s GTA 6 preorder share roughly matches its share of the console market, then Rockstar’s game may be attracting Xbox owners at a rate broadly consistent with the platform’s size.
Sony Has Closely Associated PS5 With GTA 6
Hardware numbers are only part of the story.
Sony has spent considerable effort positioning GTA 6 on PS5 as one of the defining releases of the console generation.
Rockstar’s gameplay presentations have prominently featured PlayStation hardware, while Sony has highlighted the game through its own marketing channels. PlayStation has also promoted GTA 6 support for features including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and 3D audio.
The effect is subtle but important.
GTA 6 is not a PlayStation exclusive. It launches on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Yet sustained PlayStation focused promotion can create a stronger association between Rockstar’s game and Sony’s console, particularly among casual consumers.
That matters for people who own both systems and simply need to decide where to buy the game.
For those customers, controller features, existing friend groups and the console used in promotional material could all influence the final decision.
GTA 6 Could Drive Another Wave of Console Upgrades
The preorder discussion also highlights a much bigger opportunity for Sony and Microsoft.
Grand Theft Auto VI is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One at launch. Anyone still relying exclusively on previous generation hardware will need to upgrade if they want to play Rockstar’s new game immediately.
That gives GTA 6 unusual power as a hardware seller.
Many players have delayed buying a current generation console because major releases have continued appearing across generations. GTA 6 removes that option.
For Sony, its enormous PS4 audience represents a pool of potential PS5 buyers. Microsoft can similarly use GTA 6 to encourage remaining Xbox One players to move to Series X or Series S.
The November launch could therefore affect hardware sales as much as software charts.
Preorders Do Not Tell the Entire GTA 6 Story
Early preorder numbers should also be treated carefully.
The people ordering GTA 6 months before launch are likely to include Rockstar’s most committed fans. They do not necessarily represent everyone who will eventually buy the game.
Millions of customers may wait for launch week, reviews, hardware bundles or holiday promotions. Others will purchase digitally once preload periods begin.
Platform preference can shift during that period.
Rockstar and the console manufacturers also possess far more detailed information than outside observers. Without complete figures from those companies, reports about the GTA 6 PS5 and Xbox sales split can provide useful signals, but not a definitive picture.
GTA 6 Is Becoming a Major Test for Both Platforms
The disagreement over preorder numbers shows just how important GTA 6 has become to the console business.
Sony has the larger current generation install base and has spent years strengthening the connection between PlayStation and Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster. That naturally gives PS5 an advantage in total potential sales.
Microsoft, meanwhile, argues that Xbox demand is healthy within the context of its smaller hardware footprint. If GTA 6 is already setting preorder records on Xbox, the company has reason to emphasize that performance rather than the raw comparison with PS5.
Both things can be true at once.
PS5 can account for a significantly larger percentage of overall GTA 6 preorders while Xbox simultaneously records one of the strongest launches in its history.
The real test comes when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Until Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft provides comprehensive sales data, the precise platform split remains uncertain. What is already clear is that GTA 6 is large enough to expose the difference in scale between the two console ecosystems while still generating enormous demand on both.
