Is Playing GTA 6 Cheating? Viral TikTok Debate Turns Jason and Lucia’s Romance Into a Relationship Argument

GTA 6 is still months away from release, yet Rockstar Games has somehow found itself at the centre of an unexpected relationship debate. A series of viral TikTok videos is questioning whether participating in Jason and Lucia’s optional romantic activities could count as cheating on a real-life partner.

The argument sounds absurd at first. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are fictional characters who already share a relationship within Grand Theft Auto VI. Players are controlling their story, not personally dating either character.

Still, the debate has gained enough attention that relationship professionals are weighing in.

Why Are People Calling GTA 6 “Cheating”?

The controversy comes from Rockstar’s expanded relationship system for Jason and Lucia.

GTA 6 does more than place its two protagonists together during robberies and story missions. Players can also engage with the relationship between them through optional activities.

That can include spending time together, exchanging messages, planning activities and developing their bond. Jason and Lucia can also display physical affection, including holding hands and kissing.

For most players, these mechanics are simply another part of character development.

A small but highly visible group on TikTok sees things differently.

Several creators have argued that controlling Jason during romantic interactions with Lucia crosses a relationship boundary. Some have gone further, saying they do not want their boyfriends, husbands or fiancés playing GTA 6 at all.

A Viral TikTok Turned the Argument Into a Bigger Story

One of the most widely discussed videos came from TikTok creator Shelby Haas, who said she did not want her fiancé playing GTA 6 because of its relationship mechanics.

Her concerns centred on the idea that players could maintain Jason’s relationship with Lucia, communicate with her and participate in romantic activities.

Her fiancé, fitness creator Alex Eubank, later responded publicly and said he had decided not to play the game because the issue mattered to his partner.

Other creators soon joined the discussion.

Some described the game as inappropriate for people in committed relationships. Others characterised the romance mechanics as a form of virtual infidelity.

However, the reaction has hardly been one-sided. Many responses argue that controlling fictional characters in a scripted relationship has little connection to cheating in the real world.

A Couples Therapist Says Cheating Is About Agreed Boundaries

Mashable asked Los Angeles-based sex and couples therapist Ilana Grines to examine the debate.

Her answer adds considerably more nuance than the viral TikTok arguments.

Grines explained that infidelity cannot always be reduced to the presence of romantic or sexual content. What matters is the understanding that exists between two people in a relationship.

Different couples draw boundaries in different places.

One couple may have no problem with pornography, flirtation or romance in video games. Another may agree on stricter limits. Problems can emerge when someone knowingly crosses a boundary that both partners had previously established or begins hiding behaviour.

Under that framework, simply playing GTA 6 is not automatically cheating.

The Better Question May Be Why the Mechanic Feels Threatening

Grines also suggested that couples can become overly focused on deciding whether a particular behaviour technically qualifies as cheating.

That can distract from the more useful conversation.

If seeing a partner control Jason while he dates Lucia genuinely causes discomfort, what specifically creates that feeling?

Is it the sexual content? Is it the romantic interaction? Is it the amount of time spent gaming? Or does the game touch an existing insecurity within the relationship?

Those questions reveal more than arguing over whether fictional romance satisfies a universal definition of infidelity.

There is no universal relationship rulebook for playing GTA.

Some of the Outrage May Simply Be TikTok Bait

There is another factor worth considering: social media rewards extreme opinions.

Grines reportedly viewed at least part of the GTA 6 cheating debate as TikTok bait.

That interpretation makes sense when looking at how viral controversies spread. Saying “I have mixed feelings about my partner interacting with romance mechanics in games” is unlikely to generate millions of views.

Saying “playing GTA 6 is cheating” is much more effective.

It creates an immediate argument. People share it because they agree, because they strongly disagree, or simply because the premise sounds unbelievable.

Indeed, many responses to the viral posts reject the idea rather than support it. The visibility of the debate therefore should not be mistaken for evidence that most partners consider GTA 6 a threat to their relationships.

Romance in Video Games Is Nothing New

The controversy is also unusual because romantic interaction has existed in games for decades.

Mass Effect allows players to develop relationships with crew members. The Witcher series contains romance and sexual content. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers numerous relationship possibilities. The Sims allows players to create entire fictional romantic lives.

Grand Theft Auto itself has previously included dating mechanics.

What makes GTA 6 different is the extraordinary amount of attention surrounding it.

Almost every new mechanic Rockstar reveals becomes a mainstream discussion. Jason and Lucia’s relationship is therefore reaching audiences who may never have paid attention to romance systems in role-playing games.

Jason and Lucia’s Relationship Is Part of Their Story

There is also an important narrative distinction.

Lucia is not being presented simply as a fictional girlfriend for the player. She is one of GTA 6’s two protagonists.

Jason and Lucia enter the story with a personal connection, and Rockstar has repeatedly framed trust between them as central to the narrative.

The player is effectively guiding two fictional characters through their relationship while controlling both sides of the partnership.

Rockstar has also indicated that players do not have to spend all their time developing the romantic side of their bond. Their relationship system is designed to offer additional interaction rather than turn GTA 6 into a dating simulator.

GTA 6 Is Exposing a Much Broader Relationship Debate

Ultimately, the TikTok controversy may reveal more about modern relationships than it does about Rockstar’s game.

Digital entertainment increasingly includes realistic characters, relationships and interactive intimacy. The boundaries between watching a fictional romance and participating in one can therefore feel less obvious than they did with passive media.

That does not make playing GTA 6 inherently unfaithful.

Grines does not consider it automatically cheating either. Instead, her advice points back toward communication and boundaries between the actual people involved.

If a couple genuinely disagrees about the content, discussing it before the game arrives is more productive than allowing a viral TikTok argument to define their relationship rules.

After all, Jason and Lucia are fictional.

The relationship affected by the argument is real.
