Grand Theft Auto VI is already producing unusual sales numbers months before release. New market data suggests that an extraordinary 89% of early buyers are choosing the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition, despite its $99.99 price.
The figure comes from digital intelligence company Sensor Tower and highlights just how differently Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster is behaving compared with a typical major release. Premium editions normally attract dedicated fans during the preorder period, but an almost nine in ten share is far outside the industry’s usual range.
For Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive, the early numbers also provide an important answer to one of the biggest questions surrounding the game: how much are players actually prepared to pay for GTA 6?
So far, the answer appears to be $100.
GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Reportedly Captures 89% of Preorders
According to Sensor Tower data reported by HotHardware, approximately 89% of GTA 6 preorders are going to the Ultimate Edition. The premium package costs $99.99, while the Standard Edition is priced at $79.99.
That difference may appear relatively modest in isolation. However, the percentage of customers choosing the expensive version is remarkable when compared with normal videogame buying patterns.
Karl Kontus, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, told GamesIndustry.biz that a 50% premium share during a preorder period would already represent an excellent result. Typical premium edition shares, according to Kontus, sit closer to 10% to 20%.
That puts GTA 6’s Ultimate Edition in a very different category. An 89% share is not simply a successful premium launch. It suggests that the premium package has effectively become the preferred version among the game’s earliest customers.
Why Are Players Paying $100 for GTA 6?
Part of the explanation is straightforward. GTA 6 has spent years near the top of gaming’s most anticipated lists, while Grand Theft Auto V originally arrived back in 2013. The unusually long gap between major entries has created a huge audience waiting for Rockstar’s next open world.
There is another factor, however. The difference between the Standard and Ultimate editions is only $20 in the United States.
A customer already willing to spend $79.99 may see the jump to $99.99 differently from someone deciding between a traditional $60 release and a $100 special edition. For committed GTA players, particularly those expecting hundreds of hours of play, another $20 can appear relatively small.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently provided further evidence of that trend, saying early GTA 6 preorders were heavily favoring the premium edition. Sensor Tower’s figures now give that observation additional context.
Rockstar Is Offering More Than Cosmetic Bonuses
The contents of the Ultimate Edition also matter. Rockstar has not limited the package to digital artwork, soundtrack extras or a handful of cosmetic items.
The $100 GTA 6 Ultimate Edition includes additional vehicles, weapons, apparel and other content integrated into Jason and Lucia’s experience. Rockstar has also promoted exclusive customization options and other bonuses intended to remain useful during normal play.
That distinction could be influencing purchasing decisions. Premium editions often struggle when players believe the additional material has little practical value. GTA 6 presents its higher tier as an expanded version of an experience many customers already expect to play for a long time.
Kontus noted that the package contains a meaningful selection of vehicles, weapons and customization content rather than relying entirely on filler bonuses.
For dedicated players, that makes the calculation fairly simple: pay $80 for the core game or spend another $20 for the more complete package.
The Numbers Need Some Context
The 89% figure is striking, but it should not automatically be treated as a prediction of how GTA 6’s lifetime sales will be divided.
Preorder customers are not representative of every buyer. They are typically among a game’s most enthusiastic followers and are therefore more willing to purchase expensive editions. Once Grand Theft Auto VI reaches the wider market, the Standard Edition could account for a considerably larger percentage of sales.
That distinction is important.
Even so, the current premium share remains exceptional compared with the benchmarks Sensor Tower normally sees. It also demonstrates that the controversy surrounding rising videogame prices has not prevented Rockstar’s most committed audience from spending more.
GTA 6 Could Influence Future Game Pricing
The industry’s attention will extend beyond Rockstar’s immediate revenue. Publishers have spent years testing higher launch prices, deluxe editions and premium digital packages. GTA 6 offers an unusually large experiment in how far that strategy can go.
If millions of customers consistently choose a $100 edition when a cheaper version exists, other publishers will notice.
However, copying Rockstar’s strategy may not be simple. Grand Theft Auto has a level of cultural reach that few franchises can match. GTA V has remained commercially relevant across multiple console generations, while anticipation for its successor has built for more than a decade.
In other words, GTA 6 preorder demand may say as much about the strength of Grand Theft Auto as it does about consumer acceptance of $100 games.
GTA 6 Is Heading Toward Its November Release
Rockstar opened global preorders for Grand Theft Auto VI on June 25, 2026. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
With months still remaining before release, purchasing patterns could change considerably. More casual customers may favor the Standard Edition, while others may simply wait for reviews before spending anything.
For now, though, Rockstar has achieved something rarely seen in the videogame business. Its most expensive mainstream version is not behaving like a niche upgrade. Among early buyers, it is reportedly dominating.
Fans may be surprised by the size of the gap, particularly after months of discussion about rising software prices. Yet the numbers underline an important reality: GTA 6 is operating under a different level of demand from most releases.
Whether that 89% premium share survives closer to launch remains uncertain. The early message, however, is difficult to miss. For many of the players already committed to buying GTA 6, the $100 price has not been enough to push them toward the cheaper edition.
