The countdown to GTA 6 is firmly underway. Rockstar Games has opened UK preorders for its long-awaited return to Vice City, confirming prices for both available editions ahead of the November 19 release.
For most buyers, the choice appears straightforward. The GTA 6 Standard Edition costs £69.99, while the digital Ultimate Edition is priced at £89.99. The more expensive package adds vehicles, missions, weapons and a sizeable collection of customization options.
However, there is one unusual detail surrounding the physical release. Buying GTA 6 in a box at launch will not actually get you a game disc.
Instead, Rockstar is putting a digital download code inside.
GTA 6 Releases on November 19, 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI officially launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar is offering two main versions at launch. UK players can purchase the Standard Edition for £69.99 or spend another £20 on the £89.99 Ultimate Edition.
The physical Standard Edition will begin shipping approximately one week before release. That does not provide early access. Instead, Rockstar says the early delivery period gives customers enough time to redeem their codes and preload the substantial game before launch day.
Given the scale expected from GTA 6, having additional time to complete the download could prove useful for players with slower internet connections.
The GTA 6 Physical Edition Does Not Include a Disc
This is where Rockstar’s launch strategy becomes controversial.
The boxed GTA 6 physical edition contains a download code rather than a PlayStation 5 or Xbox disc. Buyers still receive a physical case, but the actual software must be downloaded through the appropriate console store.
For players who buy physical games primarily for collecting, displaying or reselling them, that distinction matters.
A code in a box cannot provide the same ownership experience as a conventional disc. Once redeemed, it is effectively tied to the relevant digital account.
There may eventually be a traditional version. European physical distribution insider Graczdari has claimed that the code-based package represents only the initial production run, with disc copies potentially arriving in December. Rockstar has not confirmed that claim.
Why Could Rockstar Be Avoiding GTA 6 Discs at Launch?
Rockstar has not publicly given a detailed explanation for avoiding discs in the initial boxes.
One theory concerns leaks.
Graczdari previously reported that Rockstar planned to avoid distributing playable discs before launch because retail copies can reach customers early. Once physical inventory enters warehouses and stores, maintaining complete control becomes considerably harder.
For most games, an early retail leak is frustrating. For GTA 6, it could become an enormous problem.
Story details, gameplay footage and major surprises could spread across social media days before Rockstar officially unlocks the game. Using download codes gives the publisher much tighter control over when players can actually access the software.
It is a logical security measure. Collectors may still dislike it.
What Comes With the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition?
The £89.99 GTA 6 Ultimate Edition is available digitally and includes a substantial collection of additional content.
Vehicle bonuses include a 1967 Vapid Dominator Buggy, a 1995 Grotti Cheetah, Dinka Enduro motorcycle, Crest Kayak and Shitzu Squalo speedboat. Players also receive exclusive modifications for Jason’s Vapid Ganado pickup and access to two specialist vehicle workshops.
Rockstar is adding extra activities as well. The Classic Car Collection questline revolves around restoring abandoned vehicles, while another compound raid offers special contraband rewards.
Additional firearms include customized weapons for Jason and Lucia, alongside exclusive weapon customization options. Cosmetic content covers outfits, hairstyles, facial hair, makeup, nail options and more than 50 additional tattoos.
It is considerably more than a soundtrack and digital art book.
Standard Edition Buyers Still Get the Full GTA 6 Story
Players who choose the £69.99 Standard Edition are not buying a reduced version of the main campaign.
Rockstar is including the complete GTA 6 single-player experience. The £20 difference primarily covers the Ultimate Edition’s exclusive vehicles, missions, weapons and customization extras.
Standard Edition customers also qualify for the main preorder package.
The Vintage Vice City Pack includes a 1955 Vapid Stanier sedan, Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach, retro outfits for Jason and Lucia, vintage hairstyles and a tropical weapon skin inspired by Tommy Vercetti’s famous Vice City look.
That makes the Standard Edition a fairly uncomplicated option for players interested primarily in Rockstar’s new story rather than additional digital collectibles.
GTA 6 Online Will Not Be Available on Release Day
Another important detail concerns multiplayer.
Rockstar currently describes GTA 6’s November 19 release as a single-player experience. There is no GTA Online component scheduled to launch alongside it.
That approach has precedent.
GTA Online followed GTA 5 rather than launching simultaneously with the original game. Red Dead Online also arrived after Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player release.
Rockstar has not announced when the next generation of GTA Online will arrive. Cross-platform multiplayer support is similarly unconfirmed.
If Rockstar eventually enables cross-play between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it would mark a notable change from GTA 5 and Red Dead Online, neither of which offers traditional cross-platform play.
There Is No GTA 6 Collector’s Edition Yet
Despite the enormous audience surrounding the game, Rockstar has not announced a conventional GTA 6 Collector’s Edition.
For now, Standard and Ultimate are the only confirmed versions.
That is slightly surprising considering Rockstar’s history. GTA 5 received a Collector’s Edition containing physical extras such as a steelbook case, blueprint-style map, security deposit bag and cap.
A comparable GTA 6 package would almost certainly attract collectors. Whether Rockstar plans to introduce one closer to launch remains unknown.
Jason and Lucia Are at the Center of Rockstar’s New Story
Whatever edition players choose, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos will lead the return to Leonida.
Rockstar describes Jason as a former soldier who becomes involved with drug runners in the Keys. Lucia, meanwhile, has recently left Leonida Penitentiary and is looking for another path forward.
The supporting cast includes smugglers, musicians, criminals and aspiring business figures spread across Vice City and the surrounding region.
Rockstar’s official material suggests the relationship between Jason and Lucia will form the emotional center of the story, while the wider cast provides the criminal connections expected from Grand Theft Auto.
Choosing a GTA 6 Edition Comes Down to Priorities
For UK buyers, Rockstar has kept the basic pricing decision relatively simple.
The £69.99 Standard Edition provides the complete story and preorder bonuses. Spending £89.99 unlocks a larger collection of vehicles, weapons, missions and cosmetic content.
The more complicated question concerns physical ownership.
Fans may be surprised to discover that buying GTA 6 in a physical box at launch still requires downloading the entire game. Those specifically waiting for a traditional disc may therefore prefer to hold off, especially while reports of a possible December disc edition remain unresolved.
For everyone else, November 19 is now the date that matters.
After years of speculation about GTA 6’s price, editions and launch plans, Rockstar has finally made the purchasing options clear. The only unusual part is that one of those physical options is not quite as physical as the box makes it look.
