GTA 6 Could Have a Clear Path to Game of the Year as 2026 Rivals Struggle to Keep Up

GTA 6 has not even reached players yet, but Rockstar Games may be entering the final months of 2026 with an unexpected advantage. The competition for this year’s biggest gaming awards has struggled to produce a clear challenger.

Grand Theft Auto VI entered 2026 as the obvious heavyweight. That position has barely changed.

Several games expected to challenge Rockstar have now launched, yet few have generated the combination of exceptional review scores, critical enthusiasm and cultural momentum usually associated with a Game of the Year winner.

That does not mean GTA 6 has already won anything. Far from it. Rockstar’s game still needs to launch, meet extraordinary expectations and arrive within the eligibility rules of the major awards.

For now, however, the field looks unusually open.

GTA 6 Entered 2026 as the Presumptive Favorite

Before the year began, predicting GTA 6 for Game of the Year hardly seemed controversial.

Rockstar’s previous major releases established an intimidating standard. GTA 5 became one of the most commercially successful entertainment products ever released, while Red Dead Redemption 2 earned widespread praise for its world design, storytelling and technical detail.

GTA 6 carries those expectations into a modern version of Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Rockstar has also spent more than a decade preparing the first new numbered Grand Theft Auto since 2013. Every official trailer and gameplay presentation has consequently attracted enormous attention.

Yet popularity alone does not decide awards.

Rockstar learned that lesson before. Red Dead Redemption 2 entered the 2018 awards season as a major favorite, but God of War ultimately won Game of the Year at The Game Awards.

Nothing is guaranteed.

Resident Evil Requiem Remains a Serious Contender

If there is one established rival in the current race, Resident Evil Requiem appears difficult to ignore.

Polygon placed Capcom’s horror release at the top of its Game of the Year frontrunners earlier in 2026, and it has remained there as other expected challengers arrived.

That consistency matters.

Resident Evil has both critical recognition and the prestige of a long-running franchise. Capcom has also enjoyed a strong creative period with recent Resident Evil releases, giving Requiem the kind of pedigree awards voters recognise.

The more surprising development is how few games have clearly joined it.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Did Not Become the Obvious Breakout

The Blood of Dawnwalker looked almost tailor-made for awards season.

The vampire RPG comes from Rebel Wolves, a studio containing developers with experience on The Witcher 3. It offers a narrative-driven role-playing adventure from a comparatively young team, the sort of combination that can generate considerable enthusiasm among critics.

Polygon itself responded strongly to the game.

The wider critical reception has been more restrained. The game sits around the low 80s on Metacritic rather than reaching the 90-plus territory often associated with the most obvious Game of the Year nominees.

An 80-plus score is hardly a failure. It represents a well-received game.

However, awards races are unusually competitive. Being good and becoming one of six defining releases of an entire year are very different achievements.

Onimusha and Orbitals Have a Similar Problem

Two other potential challengers, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Orbitals, have also received respectable reactions without clearly taking control of the conversation.

Onimusha brought Capcom’s samurai action series back into the spotlight, while Orbitals offered a cooperative experience that naturally invited comparisons with previous multiplayer awards successes.

Neither appears to have produced the critical groundswell needed to become an obvious frontrunner.

This pattern has repeated throughout 2026.

Promising releases arrive. Reviews are positive. Players enjoy them. Yet the overwhelming critical consensus that often surrounds a major Game of the Year contender rarely materialises.

A 90 Metacritic Score Is Not an Automatic Ticket Either

Review averages do not determine The Game Awards nominations, but history shows that exceptionally strong critical reception helps.

Even then, genre can complicate matters.

Forza Horizon 6, for example, faces the long-standing difficulty racing games encounter in top-category awards. A superb review average does not guarantee a Game of the Year nomination.

Indie multiplayer titles can face similar challenges.

That leaves 2026 in a strange position. Some highly rated games belong to genres that historically struggle for the top prize, while more conventional awards contenders have stopped short of overwhelming critical acclaim.

GTA 6 could benefit from both factors.

Major Games Still Have Time to Change the Race

The competition is not finished.

Several significant releases can still reshape the conversation, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day and Phantom Blade Zero.

A late-year release can change an awards race remarkably quickly.

One exceptional game could turn what currently looks like an easy path for Rockstar into a genuine contest. Moreover, GTA 6 itself carries risks that its competitors do not.

The expectations are enormous.

A merely excellent Grand Theft Auto game may be judged more harshly than a surprising new release because players have spent years expecting something extraordinary.

GTA 6 Still Has to Prove It Deserves the Crown

This is the most important qualification in any discussion about GTA 6 winning GOTY 2026.

Rockstar has shown extensive footage, but controlled presentations are not the same as critics and players spending dozens of hours with the finished game.

The final release needs to deliver across several areas.

Jason and Lucia’s story needs to hold together. Leonida needs to remain compelling beyond its visual spectacle. Missions must provide enough freedom and variety. The game’s enormous simulation systems also need to function reliably on console hardware.

Technical problems at launch could quickly change the narrative.

There is also the question of whether Rockstar can meaningfully advance its open-world formula rather than simply produce a larger and more detailed version of what players already know.

That distinction could matter to awards voters.

Rockstar Has Been Beaten Before

History provides another reason to avoid treating the award as inevitable.

GTA 5 dominated gaming culture in 2013, yet The Last of Us became the year’s defining critical favorite across many awards.

Five years later, Red Dead Redemption 2 seemed capable of sweeping The Game Awards. Instead, Sony Santa Monica’s God of War claimed the top prize.

Rockstar’s scale does not make it unbeatable.

Sometimes a smaller or more focused game arrives with stronger emotional impact. Sometimes voters reward innovation over technical ambition. Awards are ultimately decided by people, not sales projections.

2026 May Be GTA 6’s Race to Lose

Still, the current landscape clearly favors Rockstar.

Several expected challengers have already arrived without becoming undeniable GOTY frontrunners. Resident Evil Requiem remains firmly in the conversation, while upcoming releases still have an opportunity to upset the field.

But none currently carries the cultural weight surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI.

That gives GTA 6 an unusual opportunity.

If Rockstar delivers the level of quality suggested by its recent demonstrations, the game may enter awards season without the kind of universally acclaimed rival that could make the result genuinely unpredictable.

Of course, that is a very large “if.”

GTA 6 still has to survive reviews, player expectations and one of the most scrutinised launches in gaming history. A famous name can make a game the favorite. It cannot make it Game of the Year.

Rockstar has to earn that part.
