Former Rockstar Games employees have described the personal and financial consequences of losing their jobs as an employment tribunal examining the controversial dismissals continues in the UK.
The case concerns workers dismissed by Rockstar in October 2025, including developers who had been working on GTA 6. The Independent Workers of Great Britain, or IWGB, argues that the dismissals were linked to union organising. Rockstar firmly denies that allegation and says employees were dismissed for gross misconduct after confidential company information was shared outside authorised channels.
Now, statements from former employees are putting greater focus on the human impact of the dispute.
Former Rockstar Workers Describe the Moment They Were Dismissed
Testimony presented during the proceedings describes workers being called into meetings and unexpectedly told their employment had ended.
Several of those involved had spent years at Rockstar and were contributing to one of the most anticipated entertainment projects in development.
According to statements reported from the tribunal, some employees said they were given little opportunity to understand the allegations against them before losing their jobs. The IWGB has argued that workers were denied a fair disciplinary process and meaningful opportunity to appeal.
Rockstar disputes the union’s interpretation of events.
The company maintains that the dismissals followed serious breaches of confidentiality rules. It says its actions were based on employee conduct rather than membership of, or participation in, a trade union.
Financial Consequences Quickly Became Serious
Losing a job unexpectedly can create immediate financial problems, particularly for employees with mortgages, rent and family responsibilities.
Statements from former Rockstar staff describe that pressure becoming a major concern after the dismissals.
Some workers reportedly faced uncertainty over how they would meet regular household expenses. Others had to consider finding employment quickly in an industry where recruitment can take months and where large-scale layoffs have already increased competition for available positions.
That context matters.
The video game industry has experienced significant job losses in recent years. Developers with substantial experience can still face lengthy searches for suitable positions, particularly when they need to remain in a specific location.
For employees suddenly removed from Rockstar, the timing therefore created more than a professional setback.
One Former Employee Faced Immigration Consequences
The situation became particularly serious for workers whose right to remain in the UK depended on their employment.
One former Rockstar developer involved in the dispute reportedly had to leave the country after losing company sponsorship connected to his visa.
The IWGB has highlighted the case as an example of how dismissal can affect international employees far beyond the loss of salary.
When employment is tied to immigration status, losing a position can start a separate countdown. A worker may need to secure another eligible sponsor or make plans to leave the country.
Rockstar’s legal responsibility for the dismissals, however, is precisely what the tribunal is being asked to examine. The consequences experienced by former employees do not by themselves establish whether the company acted unlawfully.
The Discord Channel Remains Central to Rockstar’s Defence
At the heart of the dispute is an online Discord group used by workers.
Rockstar alleges that confidential information was discussed in a space accessible to people outside the company. The studio says the material included sensitive information connected to its operations and development work.
The company has therefore characterised the issue as a serious confidentiality breach.
The IWGB challenges that account. It argues that the Discord discussions were connected to workplace organising and that Rockstar’s response amounted to unlawful action against union members.
Determining the nature of those conversations, who could access them and what information was actually disclosed is likely to remain important as evidence is examined.
GTA 6 Makes the Dispute Unusually High Profile
Employment tribunals rarely attract widespread attention from video game players. This case is different because many of the workers were attached to Grand Theft Auto VI.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar is therefore approaching the final stage of development and release preparations while the tribunal examines events inside the company.
The game itself is not the legal issue. Nevertheless, its enormous profile means almost every development surrounding Rockstar attracts international attention.
Confidentiality is also particularly sensitive at the studio.
Rockstar has traditionally maintained strict control over information concerning unreleased games. GTA 6 has already experienced major leaks during development, making the protection of internal material a significant concern for the company.
That history provides context for Rockstar’s position, but it does not settle the employment dispute. The tribunal must determine whether the specific dismissals were lawful.
The Union Says Organising Was the Real Issue
The IWGB continues to argue that the dismissals were connected to efforts by employees to organise collectively.
The union has been campaigning for improvements including stronger job security, better working conditions, greater transparency and protection for workers following major game launches.
Rockstar rejects the suggestion that union activity motivated the dismissals.
That creates two fundamentally different versions of the same events.
Under Rockstar’s account, employees breached important confidentiality obligations and faced disciplinary consequences. Under the union’s account, workers engaged in protected organising activity and were subsequently removed.
The tribunal will have to decide which interpretation is supported by the evidence.
The Personal Testimony Changes the Tone of the Case
Until now, much of the public discussion has focused on corporate statements, union allegations and questions about confidential information.
The employee statements add another dimension.
They describe careers interrupted without warning, financial uncertainty and, in at least one case, serious immigration consequences. They also underline how much personal investment developers can have in projects that remain unfinished when employment suddenly ends.
For some former Rockstar employees, that means watching GTA 6 approach release without being part of the team completing work they helped build.
Still, personal hardship and legal liability are separate questions. The tribunal must examine Rockstar’s stated reasons for the dismissals, the workers’ conduct and whether employment and trade union protections were breached.
That process is continuing.
With GTA 6’s November release approaching, the proceedings ensure that Rockstar’s workplace practices will remain under scrutiny during what would otherwise be a period dominated almost entirely by the company’s biggest game.
