Rockstar Co-Founder Dan Houser Is Deliberately Avoiding GTA 6 While Building His Next Open-World Game

Dan Houser helped shape Grand Theft Auto into one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world. Yet the former Rockstar Games creative leader is deliberately keeping his distance from GTA 6.

His reason is not a lack of interest in what his former colleagues are creating. Instead, Houser wants to protect the creative process at Absurd Ventures, the company he founded after leaving Rockstar.

Absurd has several projects in development, including its own open-world action comedy. Houser does not want exposure to GTA 6 to influence, distract or unintentionally reshape those ideas.

It creates an unusual situation. One of the people most closely associated with Grand Theft Auto’s identity is intentionally trying not to learn too much about its next chapter.

Dan Houser Does Not Want GTA 6 Influencing His New Work

Speaking about his current projects, Houser explained that he is actively avoiding Grand Theft Auto 6 material because he does not want it interfering with what Absurd Ventures is developing.

The concern is understandable.

Houser spent decades working inside Rockstar. His writing and creative leadership helped define the tone of games including Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.

Now he is attempting to establish a separate creative identity.

Closely studying GTA 6 while developing another open-world comedy could make that separation more difficult. Even subconscious influence could affect decisions involving humor, world design, characters or narrative structure.

Houser therefore appears to be giving his new team room to develop its own voice.

Absurd Ventures Is Building an Open-World Comedy

The GTA 6 connection becomes particularly interesting because one of Absurd Ventures’ projects occupies familiar territory.

The studio is developing an open-world action comedy adventure.

That description immediately invites comparisons with Grand Theft Auto. Houser, however, is clearly trying to prevent the project from becoming an imitation of his previous work.

Details remain limited, but the game is associated with Absurd’s broader fictional universe and reflects the company’s unusual approach to developing intellectual property across several forms of media.

Rather than operating purely as a conventional game studio, Absurd Ventures has explored stories through audio productions, novels, comics and interactive entertainment.

The open-world project will therefore emerge from a company structured very differently from Rockstar.

Houser’s Rockstar Legacy Makes Comparisons Unavoidable

Even if Houser avoids GTA 6 completely, comparisons will follow his next game.

He co-founded Rockstar Games in 1998 and became one of the most influential creative figures behind its biggest releases.

His credits include numerous Grand Theft Auto games as well as both Red Dead Redemption titles. Houser’s work helped establish Rockstar’s recognizable combination of crime fiction, satire, cinematic storytelling and large open worlds.

He left Rockstar in 2020 after taking an extended break from the company.

That departure meant GTA 6 became the first new mainline Grand Theft Auto developed without Dan Houser occupying his familiar creative role.

For longtime players, that alone makes the upcoming release an important test of how Rockstar’s storytelling evolves under its current leadership.

GTA 6 Is Moving Forward Without One of GTA’s Key Writers

Rockstar has since revealed considerably more about GTA 6’s story.

Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval lead the game, with their relationship positioned at the centre of the narrative. Rockstar’s current writers have described them as contrasting and imperfect characters who can influence one another.

The wider setting of Leonida also preserves the social satire associated with Grand Theft Auto.

Recent comments from Rockstar’s narrative team suggest the studio wants its fictional version of modern America to feel even more exaggerated than reality.

That is familiar GTA territory, even without Houser directly shaping it.

Rockstar has retained a large creative team with years of experience across GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and other projects. GTA 6 therefore represents evolution rather than a complete creative reset.

Houser Is Developing Several New Worlds

Absurd Ventures is not relying on a single project.

Houser’s company has been building several original properties, including American Caper and A Better Paradise.

A Better Paradise began as an audio fiction project and is also being developed as a video game. The company has described its ambitions across multiple forms of storytelling rather than restricting each fictional world to one medium.

This gives Houser an opportunity he did not have in exactly the same way at Rockstar.

He can establish new universes without decades of audience expectations attached to them.

Grand Theft Auto carries enormous history. Every new feature is compared with previous games. Every character is measured against earlier protagonists. Even small changes can generate debate among millions of players.

Starting again offers more freedom.

Avoiding GTA 6 Could Be a Practical Creative Decision

Houser’s decision should not necessarily be interpreted as criticism of Rockstar or GTA 6.

From a development perspective, avoiding a major competitor while working on a conceptually related project can be useful.

Creative teams often need enough distance to discover their own solutions.

If Houser and his colleagues spent months analysing Rockstar’s latest open world, they could begin reacting to GTA 6 instead of concentrating on what makes their own game distinctive.

That would be particularly risky given Houser’s history.

Players already expect his next open-world project to carry traces of GTA. Absurd Ventures has little reason to strengthen that comparison unnecessarily.

GTA 6 and Houser’s New Game Will Inevitably Be Compared

Distance will not stop the eventual comparisons.

When Absurd Ventures finally reveals more of its open-world action comedy, players will examine its dialogue, humor, missions and world structure through the lens of Houser’s Rockstar career.

That may be unavoidable.

The more interesting question is whether his new work can establish an identity strong enough to move beyond those comparisons.

Meanwhile, Grand Theft Auto 6 is doing something similar from the opposite direction.

Rockstar must demonstrate that Grand Theft Auto can continue evolving without one of the writers who helped define the franchise for decades.

Both sides are moving into unfamiliar territory.

Two Different Futures Are Emerging From Rockstar’s Past

There is a certain symmetry to the situation.

Rockstar is preparing its most ambitious Grand Theft Auto without Dan Houser. At the same time, Houser is building a new open-world comedy while deliberately avoiding Rockstar’s latest game.

The creative paths have separated.

For players, that could ultimately be a good thing. GTA 6 can establish what modern Rockstar looks like, while Absurd Ventures has an opportunity to build something that does not simply reproduce the formula Houser helped create decades ago.

Fans may be surprised that he is intentionally avoiding one of the most anticipated games in the industry. Yet the reasoning is straightforward.

Houser already spent much of his career helping define Grand Theft Auto.

Now he wants to find out what comes next without GTA 6 providing the answer for him.
