Rockstar Games has finally pulled back the curtain on GTA 6 in meaningful detail, releasing an Extended Look that gives players their clearest official view yet of Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos and the sprawling state of Leonida.
The roughly 26-minute presentation debuted through Netflix before reaching YouTube six hours later. Unlike a conventional trailer, it spends considerable time inside the world itself, showing car chases, shootouts, character interactions and richly detailed locations.
There is no narrator explaining every mechanic. Rockstar largely lets the footage speak for itself.
That approach leaves some questions unanswered. However, it also provides a much stronger sense of what Grand Theft Auto VI will actually feel like when players enter Vice City.
Jason and Lucia’s Relationship Is Central to GTA 6
The strongest message from the Extended Look is not about cars or weapons. It is about Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Rockstar spends significant time establishing the pair as more than two playable protagonists who happen to share the same story. Their relationship appears deeply connected to the structure of the campaign.
Rockstar developers have indicated that player actions can influence how their relationship develops, although players will reportedly have some freedom over how deeply they engage with that aspect.
The presentation does not explain the entire system. It does, however, show Jason and Lucia working together during criminal situations.
One sequence features Jason helping Lucia escape through a window during a drug bust at an apartment building. The footage also demonstrates the ability to shift control between the two protagonists.
That immediately recalls GTA 5’s character-switching system, although GTA 6 appears to use it within a much more closely connected partnership.
Character Switching Returns in GTA 6
GTA 6 character switching has been widely expected, but the Extended Look gives players a clearer view of how Jason and Lucia operate together.
GTA 5 divided its story between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, each of whom maintained separate lives across Los Santos and Blaine County.
Jason and Lucia are different.
Their lives appear intertwined from the beginning. That could allow Rockstar to use character switching during robberies, escapes and other situations where both protagonists occupy the same location.
The apartment escape shown during the presentation hints at that potential.
Rockstar has not yet provided a complete explanation of when players can switch freely or whether some missions restrict control to one protagonist.
Still, the returning mechanic appears to be more closely tied to the central relationship this time.
GTA 6 Could Be Rockstar’s Most Detailed Game Yet
The visual quality of the Extended Look has generated considerable attention.
Characters display highly detailed faces, convincing animation and noticeably improved skin, hair and clothing. Interiors receive similar treatment, with the presentation moving through apartments, rooftop bars, clubs and other spaces.
The background population is equally noteworthy.
GTA 6 NPCs appear with a wide range of body shapes, clothing and appearances. This helps crowded locations avoid the repetitive look that can affect open-world games when the same character models appear repeatedly.
Journalist Ryan McCaffrey described GTA 6 as potentially the best-looking game he had seen after viewing Rockstar’s presentation.
That praise is understandable.
However, graphics are only part of the achievement. What matters more is how much detail Rockstar can maintain while the player moves freely through Leonida.
Interiors Could Be Particularly Important
The number and quality of interior spaces shown during the presentation also deserve attention.
Rockstar takes viewers through apartments, entertainment venues and commercial spaces rather than restricting the showcase to streets and outdoor scenery.
This does not confirm that every building across Vice City can be entered.
Still, detailed interiors can make an open world feel substantially more convincing. Instead of buildings serving primarily as scenery, selected locations become spaces players can actually inhabit.
Fans have requested deeper interior exploration from Grand Theft Auto for years. GTA 6 appears to be moving in that direction, even if the final extent remains unknown.
GTA 6 Still Looks Unmistakably Like Grand Theft Auto
For all the technical improvements, Rockstar is not abandoning the series’ identity.
The Extended Look contains GTA 6 car chases, armed robberies, shootouts and scenes involving Leonida’s criminal underworld.
American culture remains a target for Rockstar’s satire as well. Strange characters, exaggerated personalities and dark humor appear throughout the footage.
There are plenty of distractions outside crime.
The presentation shows activities and leisure spaces scattered across the world, continuing Rockstar’s tradition of filling its maps with things to do between major missions.
This balance is important.
GTA 6 may be technically far ahead of GTA 5, but Rockstar clearly understands that players still expect the fundamental freedom and chaos associated with Grand Theft Auto.
Red Dead Redemption 2’s Influence Can Be Seen in GTA 6
Another interesting element is the apparent influence of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar’s 2018 western pushed NPC interactions much further than previous GTA titles. Arthur Morgan could greet, antagonize and respond to strangers, while characters reacted differently depending on his actions and reputation.
GTA 6 appears to expand on those ideas.
Reports surrounding Rockstar’s latest demonstrations suggest player behavior can affect how characters respond to Jason and Lucia. That could make ordinary encounters around Leonida more unpredictable.
The challenge is considerable. A modern city contains far more people, vehicles and rapidly changing situations than Red Dead Redemption 2’s frontier setting.
If Rockstar can successfully adapt that level of reactivity to Vice City, the improvement could be more meaningful than the graphical upgrade.
GTA Online Was Completely Absent
One major subject received virtually no attention: GTA 6 Online.
The Extended Look concentrates on the single-player story and open world. Rockstar did not use the presentation to reveal the successor to GTA Online.
That absence is notable because GTA Online became an enormous part of GTA 5’s long-term success.
The multiplayer mode launched shortly after GTA 5 in 2013 and has remained active for more than a decade. Its continuing popularity has also generated substantial revenue for Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive.
Few expect Rockstar to abandon online Grand Theft Auto.
However, the company has not yet provided a detailed public reveal of what the next generation of GTA Online will involve.
For now, Rockstar wants attention on Jason, Lucia and the single-player experience.
Rockstar Still Has Important Questions to Answer
The Extended Look provides substantially more information than previous GTA 6 trailers, but several important details remain unclear.
Rockstar has yet to fully explain the next online mode. Technical questions surrounding console performance also remain a major discussion point, particularly whether a 60 FPS option will be available.
Players also want deeper explanations of police AI, character progression, property ownership and the extent of accessible interiors.
That is not necessarily a weakness in the presentation.
Rockstar still has time to reveal those systems before launch.
GTA 6 Is Now Much More Than a Collection of Trailers
The most important change after the Extended Look is simple: GTA 6 finally feels like a game approaching release rather than a distant project surrounded by speculation.
Players have now seen extended footage of Vice City and Leonida, Jason and Lucia working together, character switching, combat and the densely populated environments Rockstar has spent years creating.
It is still Grand Theft Auto. That is clear.
But Rockstar appears to be combining the freedom and satire of GTA with the character detail and world reactivity it developed through Red Dead Redemption 2.
The biggest mystery is no longer what GTA 6 looks like.
It is how all of these systems will behave once millions of players are finally set loose inside Leonida.
