Meta description: Some GTA 6 fans are cancelling $400 Vice City Collection preorders after criticizing its contents, price and decision to exclude the game.
Rockstar Games rarely struggles to generate excitement around GTA 6, but its latest piece of premium merchandise has produced a very different reaction.
Some fans say they have cancelled preorders for Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection after reconsidering its $399.99 price and the merchandise included inside.
The collection launched for preorder on September 24 and contains 11 physical items inspired by Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. However, it does not contain a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI.
That combination has become the central point of criticism.
Several buyers who initially secured the limited collection later said they cancelled after deciding the package did not offer enough value. Others have defended the merchandise, particularly its branded Oakley and New Era products.
One thing should be clear: the cancellations being discussed relate to the Vice City Collection, not GTA 6 itself.
The GTA 6 Vice City Collection Costs Nearly $400
Rockstar is selling The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection for $399.99 in the United States and £349.99 in the UK.
It is a standalone Collector’s Box rather than a conventional Collector’s Edition of GTA 6.
That distinction matters because the game is sold separately.
Inside the package is a mixture of premium branded accessories, fictional Leonida merchandise and novelty collectibles. The full lineup includes a six inch Macca the Gator figure, GTA VI Oakley Frogskins sunglasses and a New Era 9FORTY A Frame snapback.
Buyers also receive a Leonida Keys crossbody bag, Macca magnetic mirror, Vice City swizzle spoon, razor blade keychain and a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass.
A Leonida Keys enamel pin set, premium stickers and a double sided souvenir poster complete the package.
It is certainly unusual. Whether it represents $400 of value is where fans disagree.
The Oakley Sunglasses Explain Part of the Price
At first glance, several of the smaller collectibles may make the asking price difficult to understand.
The GTA VI Oakley Frogskins provide some context.
Standard Oakley sunglasses in the Frogskins range can already cost well into three figures depending on the configuration. Rockstar’s version features a matte black finish, Prizm Sapphire lenses and GTA VI branding.
The New Era cap is another established branded product rather than an inexpensive generic accessory.
Those collaborations clearly contribute a significant amount to the retail price.
However, that explanation has not satisfied everyone.
For some GTA fans, expensive sunglasses are simply not what they wanted from a premium collector’s package. A traditional game Collector’s Edition might instead prioritize a major statue, art book, steelbook or physical copy of the game.
Rockstar has chosen something very different.
Some Buyers Say They Cancelled After Sleeping on the Decision
The initial rush to secure a limited Rockstar collectible appears to have been followed by some buyer reconsideration.
GamingBible highlighted several Reddit users who said they cancelled their orders after thinking about the purchase overnight.
The recurring complaint was value.
Some users felt that $400 was simply too much for a box of merchandise, particularly when GTA 6 itself is not included.
Others criticized the collection as underwhelming compared with premium editions offered for other major games.
These comments should not be treated as evidence of a mass cancellation event. They represent individual reactions posted online, and Rockstar has not published cancellation figures.
Still, the response shows that even GTA 6 branding does not automatically make every premium product an easy purchase.
Some Items Deliberately Call Back to the Original Vice City
Part of the criticism has focused on the familiarity of several items.
The mirror, swizzle spoon and razor blade inspired keychain reference merchandise associated with the original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City era.
That makes them nostalgic callbacks rather than completely new concepts.
For longtime fans, that may actually be the attraction.
The original Vice City established one of Rockstar’s most recognizable aesthetics, built around neon colors, nightlife, excess and its exaggerated interpretation of Miami culture.
GTA 6 returns to that location decades later, so reinterpreting older promotional ideas has an obvious thematic logic.
For critics, however, those callbacks can make parts of the collection feel recycled rather than exclusive enough to justify the premium price.
The Collection Is More About Leonida Than the GTA Logo
One of the more interesting choices is Rockstar’s limited reliance on straightforward GTA branding.
Much of the merchandise is presented as though it came directly from GTA 6’s fictional world.
Macca the Gator is an in universe television character. The Leonida Keys branding references one of the game’s major regions. Chunkee the Manatee is another fictional character turned into a real piece of merchandise.
This fits Rockstar’s broader approach to world building.
Grand Theft Auto has always filled its cities with fictional companies, advertisements, television programs and consumer products. The Vice City Collection takes those ideas outside the game and sells them as real objects.
That is arguably more creative than simply printing the GTA VI logo across every item.
It is also more niche.
The Leonida Poster May Have the Broadest Appeal
One item is likely to interest players regardless of how they feel about the rest of the package.
The collection includes a double sided Leonida souvenir poster showcasing the landscape of GTA 6’s new state.
Physical maps and posters have a long history with Grand Theft Auto releases. For many fans, unfolding a map before exploring a new Rockstar world was part of the launch experience.
That tradition has become particularly relevant because GTA 6’s boxed game release uses a download code, while a traditional printed map has not been confirmed for the standard package.
The Vice City Collection therefore provides one of the few confirmed physical pieces dedicated to the geography of Leonida.
The Backlash Is Unlikely to Affect GTA 6 Itself
The criticism surrounding the Collector’s Box should also be kept separate from enthusiasm for Grand Theft Auto VI.
Fans cancelling a $400 merchandise order are not necessarily cancelling their game preorder.
Rockstar’s game continues to generate enormous attention ahead of its November launch, with preorders reportedly setting records on Xbox while PS5 demand also appears extremely strong.
The controversy instead shows where some consumers draw the line.
A highly anticipated game can justify an $80 purchase for millions of players without those same customers seeing value in spending five times as much on associated merchandise.
Rockstar is clearly targeting dedicated collectors with The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection.
Some will see the Oakley collaboration, New Era cap, Macca figure and Leonida merchandise as an unusually distinctive package.
Others will see $400 worth of accessories without the one product they actually wanted inside the box.
That divide may ultimately define the collection more than any individual item.
Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, the same day GTA 6 launches for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
