Meta description: GTA 6 is already breaking Xbox preorder records, according to Microsoft, as Rockstar’s November launch builds enormous early demand.
GTA 6 preorders are already setting records on Xbox months before Rockstar Games’ long awaited open world title reaches players.
That assessment comes from Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, who has responded to recent discussion surrounding the platform split for Grand Theft Auto VI.
Reports have suggested that early GTA 6 demand is significantly higher on PlayStation 5 than Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft, however, argues that those comparisons overlook the difference in size between the two console audiences.
More importantly for Xbox, Ball says GTA 6 is already breaking preorder records on Microsoft’s platform.
That makes the situation more complicated than a simple PS5 versus Xbox contest. PlayStation can hold a larger share of total orders while GTA 6 simultaneously becomes one of Xbox’s strongest preorder performers.
Xbox Says GTA 6 Is Breaking Preorder Records
Ball addressed the growing discussion after third party data suggested GTA 6 on PS5 was attracting considerably more preorder activity than its Xbox counterpart.
The Xbox executive said Microsoft is extremely happy with what it is seeing.
According to Ball, Grand Theft Auto VI is already breaking Xbox preorder records, and the company expects additional records to fall before launch.
That is significant given the size of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.
GTA V has remained commercially relevant across three console generations, while GTA Online has kept millions of players engaged for more than a decade. GTA 6 therefore enters the market with an audience built over an unusually long period.
Early demand was always expected to be substantial. Setting platform records this far ahead of release, however, suggests many players are unwilling to wait until November.
Why PS5 Can Lead While Xbox Still Breaks Records
Much of the recent debate has centered on reports that GTA 6 preorders are heavily weighted toward PS5.
That comparison needs context.
Sony has sold considerably more current generation consoles than Microsoft. The PS5 therefore has a larger pool of potential GTA 6 customers before differences in marketing or player preference are considered.
A larger number of PS5 GTA 6 preorders would not automatically mean the game is performing poorly on Xbox.
Ball’s argument is that Microsoft’s share of orders is broadly in line with the Xbox platform’s position in the wider console market.
Put another way, Xbox may have fewer total GTA 6 buyers because it has fewer current generation consoles in homes. Within that smaller audience, demand can still be exceptional.
Both statements can therefore be true at the same time.
Third Party Preorder Data Has Important Limitations
Another complication is the quality of the information available publicly.
Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive have not released a complete worldwide breakdown showing exactly how many GTA 6 copies have been preordered on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Some widely discussed comparisons have instead relied on affiliate data and other external indicators.
Those sources can reveal useful trends, but they cannot capture every purchase.
A player who follows a retail affiliate link may appear in one dataset. Someone who purchases directly through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store may not.
Digital buying habits can also differ between platforms.
As a result, claims about the exact GTA 6 PlayStation versus Xbox preorder split should be treated carefully until comprehensive sales information becomes available.
Microsoft has access to its own storefront data, which explains why Ball can speak confidently about records being broken on Xbox without revealing exact numbers.
GTA 6 Could Become a Major Hardware Upgrade Moment
The significance of GTA 6 extends beyond software sales.
Rockstar is launching the game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version planned for release.
That puts millions of players still using older hardware in a straightforward position. If they want to play GTA 6 at launch, they need a current generation console.
Few individual games have enough mainstream recognition to influence hardware purchases on that scale.
Grand Theft Auto does.
Sony will naturally hope that remaining PS4 owners choose PS5. Microsoft has the same opportunity with players who have continued using Xbox One.
That makes the November release an important moment for both console manufacturers, regardless of which platform ultimately sells more copies.
Rockstar Is Entering the Final Stretch Before Launch
GTA 6’s marketing campaign has also accelerated considerably.
For years, Rockstar released information at a deliberately slow pace. Major trailers were followed by long periods with relatively little official news.
That is no longer the case.
Rockstar has shown extended gameplay footage, opened preorders and released a growing collection of screenshots and character information. Merchandise tied to Vice City and Leonida is also appearing as the company prepares for launch.
Game Informer is additionally preparing a major 14 page feature based on interviews with Rockstar developers, including new information and screenshots.
Each announcement keeps Grand Theft Auto VI at the center of the industry conversation.
That sustained attention is likely to drive another wave of preorders as November approaches.
GTA 6 Has an Unusual Advantage Over Most New Releases
Most games need extensive marketing to explain why players should care. GTA 6 faces a different challenge.
Its predecessor has already done much of that work.
GTA V launched in 2013 and went on to become one of the best selling entertainment products ever released. Its extraordinary lifespan means a significant portion of GTA 6’s potential audience has been waiting for a new mainline entry for more than a decade.
Rockstar is not introducing an unfamiliar sequel to the market. It is serving accumulated demand.
That helps explain why preorder records can fall before players have access to the finished game.
The Final Platform Split Matters Less Than the Scale of Demand
The PS5 and Xbox comparison will continue because GTA 6 is large enough to become a measuring stick for both platforms.
Sony’s larger installed base gives PlayStation a natural advantage in total unit sales. Microsoft’s latest comments, meanwhile, indicate that Xbox players are responding strongly within their own ecosystem.
The more revealing story may ultimately be the overall scale of demand.
If GTA 6 is already breaking Xbox preorder records while also generating even greater activity on PS5, Rockstar could be heading toward an unusually large console launch.
Exact numbers will provide a clearer picture later.
For now, Microsoft’s message is straightforward: Xbox may represent the smaller part of the current console market, but GTA 6 is performing exceptionally well there.
With Grand Theft Auto VI launching November 19, 2026, there is still plenty of time for those preorder records to climb further.
