GTA 6: the third protagonist theory loses momentum — and maybe that’s a good thing

Since 2018, when the first rumors about **GTA 6** emerged, **Rockstar Games** fans have been creating countless theories about what to expect from the new title. One of the most popular was the idea that the game would feature **three playable protagonists**, just like in **GTA 5**. However, as time has passed and new information has emerged, this hypothesis seems increasingly unlikely.

Where did this theory come from?

It all started with the famous leak known as “Project Americas”, which suggested multiple cities and up to four playable characters. The proposal seemed ambitious—and exciting. But more recent reports from respected journalists, such as **Jason Schreier (Bloomberg)**, indicate that Rockstar has opted for a leaner project, focusing on **Vice City** and only **two main protagonists: Lucia and Jason**.

Rockstar has learned from the past

After the long and exhausting development process of **Red Dead Redemption 2**, Rockstar seems to have rethought its approach. The studio now seeks to release a game that is equally grand, but more restrained and balanced, which can be expanded over time, rather than betting on a gigantic project from the outset.
This decision also shows maturity: less is more. A well-structured and cohesive storyline can have more impact than multiple disconnected points of view.

The myth of the “hidden third protagonist”

Despite the evidence, part of the community still believes in the existence of a “hidden third protagonist”, who would be revealed in a future trailer. Among the names speculated are Raul Bautista, Kai, and even a mysterious police officer. However, when analyzing the trailers already released and the game’s narrative proposal, this theory does not hold up.

Lucia and Jason are clearly the center of the plot — a criminal couple inspired by **Bonnie and Clyde**, whose relationship is the emotional heart of the story. Adding a third playable character would not only break this dynamic, but also dilute the emotional impact of the narrative.

Why two protagonists are enough

The duality between **Lucia** and **Jason** offers a rare opportunity to deepen emotional development within the **GTA** universe. The chemistry between them promises to bring new layers to the plot — something that a third point of view could easily compromise.
Even if secondary characters like Raul are prominent, that doesn’t mean they’ll be playable. Rockstar seems determined to keep the focus on the central relationship between the protagonists.

Conclusion: focus is power

Ultimately, **GTA 6** doesn’t need to repeat the formula of **GTA 5**. What worked before may not work now. The strength of the new game lies precisely in its narrative focus, the intense bond between its two protagonists, and the promise of a more emotional and cinematic story.

Theories are fun, of course. They feed the imagination and keep the community alive. But in this case, the reality seems clear: **GTA 6** will have two protagonists — and that may be the secret to its success.
